Adjusting Throttle Cable

Hi all,

I picked up a 96 Camry 4 cylinder automatic about 2 months ago and I've since noticed that it shifts pretty sloppily, mostly in 1st and 2nd gear.

I did a fluid and filter change about a month ago, and that didn't change things much. So yesterday I checked the throttle cable, and it seemed pretty loose. My manual specifies that the metal stopper should be 1mm from the end of the rubber boot with the gas pedal fully depressed. But the rubber boot is so short (~5/8") that this isn't even possible. Does anyone how long this rubber boot is supposed to be? Any comments/ suggestions are welcomed.

I think it is a mistake

I am guessing that you are reading a Haynes manual. That has to be a mistake. I believe you have to adjust the throttle linkage with your foot off the gas. That is the way I did mine and all seams to be alright. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I have a 2000 6Cyl 1MZ-FE and needed to do mine too, but the way it was described in the book was impossible.

Just make sure that your throttle opens and closes all the way first. After that you can adjust the linkage with the throttle in the closed position to the .000-.040 inches specified.

Thanks. After looking at it again, it's pretty obvious that this must be the case. I was reading a Chilton's manual, but I assume the instructions are basically the same. It actually says to adjust it with the "cable fully depressed," which is kind of ambiguous.

Anyhow, I adjusted it as you said and the shift points seem a little better. But it still seems to shift too rapidly from 1st to 2nd when I ease on the throttle. Also, it downshifts from 2nd to 1st with a jerking motion, as if there's extra resistance in 1st gear? Perhaps this is normal and I just need to get used to it?
