3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So yesterday (very hot day 97 degrees) after work I went to costco to get gas. After I filled up the tank and tightened the cap and everything (normal procedure), I started the engine and the check engine light is on. I drove a little bit and stop to check any leaks or problems under the hood but I couldn't find any visible problem.
I came home and parked the car all night and wake up this morning started the engine and the check engine light is gone. I have no idea what happened and why the check engine light came on.
Did you top it off? if so, the charcoal canister could have gotten some overflow in it,as you drove you used up a some fuel. After it sat, the fuel evaporated and thus the computor no longer reading fuel in the canister.
Did you retighten the gas gap when you checked everything?

It is possible that the gas cap was loose and you corrected the problem. A lot of our check engine lights complaints are just that, a loose or worn out gas cap. If it happens again, I would pick up a new cap and start there first. It is the least expensive thing to start with, and unless you have changed it recently, it wouldn't be a bad idea, its bound to go bad sooner or later.

If that light doesn't go out, DEFINITELY get the code read.

2001 has OBD-II. You can still read the code (it will be a history code stored in the ECU). You can go to any auto parts place that checks for codes free, and they will pull any active, pending, and history codes and tell you what they are. If you want to know what the code was, I would do this step. Let us know what code was in history.
