3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok, I'll skip the huge long text. I made a video and took pics this time since this is more of a visual thing anyways. Any ideas on how to get a full size spare in there? Mmmm, all this talk about dougnuts, and it's lunchtime.... Video first, pictures after.

Again, get a smaller 14" steel wheel off of an Camry or anything else with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. Most GM FWD mid-sided cars have this bolt pattern and swap it out. Getting a 14x5.5 will save you some space and also maybe going with a narrower tire. Instead of a 205/65R15 go with a 185/75R14 or 195/70R14. That should make up the space.
I'm gonna have to ding ya for the coffee shake! Also noticed your pointer finger is the middle one . . . <shakes head> lol
What were you saying about the tire?
OK - thoughts. . .
I don't think mine has a yellow sticker on the filler panel. Is that the donut sticker warning?
I'll look at my spare size and next time I have the 225's off, I'll see how bad it is, but I'm sure a 225 will make the panel float like yours.
Do this, pull the spare and toss the filler in. Measure from the panle to the bottom and I'll do the same this weekend (next to anchor bolt).

That's not a bad idea! I just ran the numbers in the 1010 tire calculator and it came up with 195/75R14 would have almost the same rolling diameter...

Yup that's the donut warning label.

Interesting idea... You think there might be something to that? From the trunk floor where the panel would line up to the place where that center screw screws in is a little over 7 inches straight down measurment... Ill take some measurments as soon as it stops raining cats and dogs outside

unless yr riding on >>
bald as fukc tires >> aka "May-pops" << pronounced "maepops"
>> , i think carrying the weight of a full size spare would be a step back- .. no?
Agreed - although I'd hate to be were I was camping a few weeks back and have to depend on a dognut to get me home as there was no tire store along the way.

Well normally I wouldn't have thought twice about it, and I didn't until now. I just assumed that because it wouldn't fit, no one else had a full size. Thing is, I travel long distances with this car and I'm not really confidant running long distances on a doughnut spare that was only used once in 15 years...
I mean, one scenario thats always on my mind on trips to Montreal is that a tire goes flat and I have this little flimsy tire to get me there... Next thing I know that thing blows up 20 miles later and damages much more...

Oh - try to measure to where the tire sidewall sits not the hump in the middle. >> >> JP vs US vs Canada trunk depth? <<
Hmm I'lll have to check that. No ABS on my car. Didn't many 4 cylinders come with 14's, and they have the rotor/caliper combination up front?

My 2cents: if it concerns you in that way, get a matched tire to the other four and throw some high density egg crate foam in around the perimeter of the spare to support the panels edges.
The front diff on the trans will appreciate having tires of equal rolling distance too. As one to hate points out, keeping tread on the 4 good ones, is the best option which I'm sure you do!

and get an air pump, lawl, you can always try and claim on your accident that it damaged the tire well and get a shop to cut and weld in one that will fit a full size....
but
195 millimeters = 7.67716535 in
and you said you had 7in from where the nut is soooooo....... if that center nut area is .67716535 inches higher than the surrounding area then maybe it because your trying to fit the alloy rim in and it will only fit the steelie????? you got someone with a 195 on a steelie to check this?
205 millimeters = 8.07086614 in
for more reference

^ and leaving it that way!
Flashback: a couple summers back a valve stem blew off the TSW Volcano and I remember doing a roadside swap and tossing the 225/50R17 (17" X 7" wheel) in the hole. As you report, the panel was floating just like yours.
I think steels at 6.5 or 6" so I bet its your prescious Aluminum wheel like chronoti said.

I think chasing down the accident claim path is probably a dead end, it's been over a year now, had I known I would have claimed it then and there. Hell, they probably could have just asked the recycler to chop the donor car's spare tire bay, but it's too late now...

The local discount tire has some steelies that fit my (edit: our cars ) car, I'll head over there and see if they could let me borrow one for a couple of minutes.
My friend has a corolla with 195/65R15's and steelies, I'll also give that combination a shot.
