Diesel swap for 98 Camry?

1998 Camry LE 4 cylinder. 180,000+ miles.

Well as mentioned in my other thread I might have seized the engine. So I was just wondering on the possibility of swapping in the diesel engine Toyota put in the Camry for Non US markets as I don't believe Toyota sold a diesel Camry in the US in the late 90s.

Is it a straight drop in? Are the non US market Camry the same as ours with just cosmetic differences?

Can anyone provide info on what diesel Toyota put in their non US market Camrys in 1998? I looked on Google for a bit and can't find any info on engine nomenclature and specs.

now it is not a direct drop in

if you can get a front clip (3k plus shipping i rececken) you can pull the front sub frame so you wount have to do custom mounts, prolly need custom axles because jdm camrys came small frame and wide body, usdm came only wide body (insurance issues in japan) your gonna have to import the fuel pump and filler inlet (diesel nozzles are wider), wiring harness (from clip) and i guess other random bits from the front clips should get you going

now there was a fleet issue natural gas camry one popped up on craigslist a few months back ultra rear but you can just do a ng conversion ......

Why do you want to put a diesel engine in there?

Well if it wasn't a lot more involved than dropping in another gas engine, figured it would be worth it for the fuel economy. That plus curiosity and interest.

i have thought of it too kinda why i know a little about it but the thing with it too was toyota never really released a diesel over here so not much is know about them i know there is the general swap stuff engine, wiring, but i dont know other things like what transmission ect that will work with it (why i suggested a front clip so you get all the bits and parts other than the fuel tank stuff) then i thought of propane where it is easy with a universal kit (carb like set up) have a tank installed, stronger springs/lift kit, lines run and a mini ecu to regulate the propane and cut the gas (dual fuel start/run)

im not sure where you live...but if it is in a state that has emissions checks then it wont pass. thats one of the major reasons automakers dont bring desils to the US.

As said, I think you need everything espicially the tranny as the gearing will be vastly different than a gas engine. A gas auto trans with a stall of 2,6XX RPM wouldn't do much for you. A stick would be better, but I bet every gear from 2nd on up is a different ratio than a gas eng.

Just a WAG but. . .
Gas usable RPM ~ 1500 - 5500
Deisel usable RPM ~ 1000 - 2800

Then the vibes, I bet the engine mounts are a different formula too! Stupid stuff but it all adds up to give it

ECM, Tach, filler, pumps. . . . long list past the engine bay
