3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i have a 1997 toyota camry le 4 cyl....i was told that the engine came with two different casting nmbers, one which was a 3 sfe or somthn like that and a 5sfe. Was wondering how i could tell the difference or if someone could tell me where the casting number is found on the block, any help would be appreciated!
You should be more specific, all 4 banger Camrys from 92-01 came with the 5S-FE. Prior to 92 was the 3S-FE and after 01 is some other thing that I don't know the name of.

I think it's the 2AZ-FE in 02-09 Camry's.

It would save you a lot of time to read the badge under your hood...
is this badge pretty obvious in its placement or is there some where special i should look?

Sorry, I meant that jtex2717 should be more specific when he said that all 4 cyl Camrys had the 5S-FE. I didn't mean you, you gave all the right info.

sorry for all the silly questions about the badge, im at work and my girlfriend is at home and im hopen that she can find it for me so i can just go straight to the machine shop to get the gaskets instead of going to the opposite side of town to check it for myself..
