Cost to replace timing belt for 1998 Camry?

Hello
I live in the MidWest, was wondering what it cost to replace a broken timing belt for a 1998 Camry?

Is it time consuming/lot of work?

Edit
Found this old thread
My Timing belt change (very detailed, pics) Gen 4
So now I know it is involving.

200 laborish 200 parts. Max.

Timing belt 50, waterpump 50, 2 tensioners 70, 3 oil seals 15, 2 drive belts 30. Thats approximate cost of parts.

Those parts prices are low. ONLY use OEM Toyota parts for this job.

Here is where you can get everything OEM for $170

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1997-...Q5fAccessories

If doing this job pays $200, I ought to do this as part-time work when I retire from the Fire Department in another 8 years.

I was quoted $550 . Does that sound about right?

Does it really matter if I used non OEM parts? Any bad experiences from people using non OEM parts for timing belt change? Car has 180,000+ miles so will only keep it for another 20,000 miles.

If you're only keeping the car another 20k miles, then you can get by without OEM parts. But for the sake of the car and the next owner PLEASEEEE use OEM parts. They last longer and hold up better. $550 is decent.

Not dealer, it's the mechanic where I took my car to before.

Thats pretty steep unless you live in a area without competition.

Any indie mechanic can do this for 400-450. Its a straightfoward simple job that a good mechanic can do in 3 hours tops.

The OEM parts thing is ehh skeptical at best. Many of the tensioners and belts from aftermarket companies are made in japan and korea etc. (Dayco is basically OEM) Napa sells some good waterpumps too and I remember it being a really, really good price.

If you order online then definately get OEM.

Expensive and Yes. See if you can get your own parts, if not ask that the originals are returned to you. Some mechanics may use a used Timing belt, but charge you for new.

The $550 price was for;
Timing Belt
Tensioner
Water pump
and probably idler roller
oil and trans fluid change

I have had quotes for just belt replacement from $200-340

Without actually the seeing the car I know it is not possible to know but in your guys' expereince, do you think I could make do with just a belt change? Bear in mind the belt broke while I was driving and the car has 182,000 miles on it. Last time belt was changed was at 90,000 miles.

You could, but at the very least, check to see if the seals are okay. You would not want to install the new belt and have the seals start leaking

Where I live it was $475 to replace timing belt, water pump, and crankshaft seal.

I decide to do the work myself, parts cost me about $180 at NAPA and $15 at a dealer for an oil pump seal.
Took 3-4 hours for my brother and I to complete the job. It's been about 40k miles now.
