2000 camry ignition switch

My wife got stuck at work today...the key would go in, but not turn (steering wheel stayed locked etc) triple A sent a locksmith who tapped the key with a small hammer, gave it a spray of lube and said the ignition switch is on the way out. Would a newer key help to prevent this problem from happening...or should I just bite the bullet and replace the ignition switch. How tough a job is that ? Is there a site that explains how to do it ? thanks

Was the steering wheel locked when she left the car? Sometimes it's tricky to get the key to turn when the steering wheel is locked. Try turning the wheel while turning the key.

OMG! Thank you so much for this information, my ignition cylinder stopped working after i changed my brakes..... The tap with hammer on the cylinder must have freed the tumblers or something but it worked again. Since you provided useful information and I went through the trouble of removing the ignition cylinder. First, take off the lower panel underneath the steering wheel, then take the small retangular panel around the ignition cyliner out (this small piece just pulls out) then put your key in and turn it to ACC (first click) then there is a small metal button that is recessed in underneath the ignition cylinder about 3'' in. Poke that button with something small and the whole ignition cylinder pulls out. Now, go to your dealer or wherever to get a new one with either a new key or keyed to your existing Key and replace same way with key in ACC and push it back in and install the panels back, thats it!

I would try a fresh new cut key based off the key code. Don't trace your old one. The key and metal tabs inside the tumblers wear, usually the key will wear down so far that it becomes ineffective. If after using a fresh cut key off the key code doesn't work, then would I consider changing the lock cylinder.
