That's not good. I remember reading this, but I didn't have my engine's VIN number on hand. Now that I do, my 2000 Solara motor falls within the affected VINs.
I'll keep an eye on mine. My motor only had 72k miles on it. The internals are now about 750 miles after my rebuild, but the ignition components are original.
For the record, I have the Diamond coils, not Aisin coils.
The two part numbers I could find are:
90080-19012 (Diamond) and 90919-02215 (Aisin).
So, it appears the Diamond made coils are affected.
Also, Toyota no longer sells Aisin replacements. They're all Diamond coils now. 90919-02215 has been superceded by 90080-19012. So, hit the junker if you want Aisin coils, but that's risky too. The coils list for around $80-90, so you're looking at about $300 for all three. The Diamond coils have higher internal resistances, so they do produce stronger spark, but they also get hotter.
Both are Japanese companies, but the Diamond coils are made locally.
