3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have Camry 98 and I have changed the transmission when I bought the car before 4 years, at that time it was 108K km, and now it is 156k km, how frequent do I need to change the Transmission oil?
Oh, another question, Today I checked my brake fluids, and it is almost empty!!!!, I saw it before six months, and it was almost full...what's wrong? Can I use Prestone DOT3 to fill it up?
Drain and refill on the transmission should be done about every 15,000 miles. Thats about every 25,000 km I think. Its easy, remove drain plug and refill. Less than 10$.
Dont refill your brake fluid. Your pads and/or shoes are worn and that fluid that was in the reservoir is now in the calipers since they have to travel further to contact the pads.
If you do refill it now, when the calipers are retracted to install new pads all the new fluid will overflow since the old fluid will be returning to the reservoir.
Definitely drain and refill (DON'T FLUSH!) your transmission fluid. Make sure you use DEX III around 2.6 quarts. Personally, I would use Valvoline High Mileage Merc/Dex fluid- it works great and smells really fresh. What color is your transmission fluid btw?
As for the brake fluid, You might be leaking somewhere. Check your hoses/brake lines.
So what I should do now? Do you mean my brakes are gone?!! and I need to replace them?
I always ask my mechanic please check my brakes with every oil change and he says they are fine....I don't understand the story....
The rear drum breaks are more then likely worn out. Pull the emergency brake. If it has to travel almost to the end in order to grab their probally almost done.
Most mechanics just spot check stuff like this on every oil change and dont take the drum off. They only look at the front, hell some only look at the rotor since they make more $$$ if your pads are gone and destroy the rotors.
I remember it was rosy coolor when I filled it in 2006, do you mean I need to add up on it?
For the brake fluid, yes when pull the emergency brake, it takes all the way to work, but it was like this since I bought the car. Could be my front shoe pads? how can I know? is it how thick they are?
Go to a Toyota dealer and get the red stuff. Also pick up 3 gallons of deionized water, or distilled water is fine. Drain the coolant from the rad, and also from the drain plug at the back of the engine. Fill it back up with water, run it until hot, wait a bit then drain it all out again.
Mix the Toyota coolant to a 50/50 ratio, and slowly fill. If you have a Lisle Spill-Free Funnel, even better. A hydrometer will also help you get the right mix, there is always some fluid left int he system, so after flushing with water you will be slightly under a 50/50 mix. You can compensate for this by putting pure coolant into the overflow tank, what gets drawn back into the system usually will end up making the mix very close to ideal.
When is the best time to check on the coolant level? before you turn on the car in the morning or after coming back from work? While it is off or on? And when to fill it in? While it is working or while it is off?

Check it in the morning with the engine off. It is a closed pressurized system so if you tried to check it after it's been running...you'd git a face full of hot steamy coolant all over yer face/body. Not good.
I always check the overflow bottle fer level and color/condition every week. A peek under the cap once a month.
