Sticky Downshift W/Cruise On

Hey Fellow TN'ers,

I'm having an issue that is occurring under CC activation. before I explain what is happening, I'll cover a couple of things...

1) I did do a search before posting, but was unable to come up with anything really relevant to my issue in particular.
2) The transmission underwent a complete fluid change less than 3K ago. Using dino Dex in the differential,( I had some laying around, didn't want to waste it) and Dex IV in the trans itself. Old fluid was not burnt or heavily discolored in any way, as the original owner had the vehicle serviced at the dealer, have papers to prove it. The transmission shifts flawlessly when the throttle is under manual (my) control, in D, with O/D on.

Here's the issue. When under CC, the trans will come out of O/D on a short hill, and come back down just fine. BUT...When climbing a long hill, it will shift to 3rd/2nd, and will often stay there far longer, even though the road surface has flattened out. Sometimes it will upshift on it's own, and when it does, it shifts HARD...jerks the whole car....sometimes I have to cancel the cruise, to get it to upshift, and it does the same hard jerk back to 4th gear.

I tried a test...forced the trans to downshift with my foot, and then let up after a few seconds, it was a smooth transition...what gives? The issue would seem to me to be in the CC actuator maybe, or a maladjusted cable. But if that were the case, I would have hard upshifts and downshifts even if cruise was not on....right?

BTW, no transmission solenoid codes, no excessive material in trans pan, just normal fine grey shavings. No flashing O/D light. Trans is at HOT mark and no further. No aeration of fluid.

1997 A140E, 167K.

Never mind, folks, looks like this thread from yotarepair.com is the answer I was looking for....

Cruise Control will not upshift into OD after downshifting. We started to see this happening in 97 with the 4 Cyl. 4 Runners then other models. The Corolla was solved with the new cruise computer but it is happening on others. Doing some research I have found that there is a circuit that comes from the ECM to the cruise control ECU. The circuit is labeled OD1 on the ECM and terminal 14 on most cruise computers. The interesting thing is that I don't know exactly what that circuit does but it solves the shifting problem and does not affect anything else. All models have this circuit except the Runner and Tacoma. 2/99 Toyota has come out with a service bulletin on this and the cruise control ECU's the cause so consult the bulletin for the parts you may need. 4/00
