3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, I'm a proud owner of a 98 Camry LE 4 banger ... inherited from my dad lol. It's not the best of cars... its beige and boring to the fullest, but its one hell of a reliable car. That 5sfe can take quite the beating. I plan on slowly and progressively making this car better (hopefully some members can give me some advice).
Well heres some pics ;
Whats been done to the car so far:
6000k HID kit
18x7.5 5zigens
Eibach prokit
window tint, etc..
Future plans:
TRD strut bar (if I can find one)
Whiteline or TRD rear sway bar
Intake..short ram or Cold air intake (what do you guys suggest?)
Cat-back exhaust (suggestions?)
Install aftermarket fog lights
New struts..possibly tokico's or KYB
Coilovers
... and anything else that comes by. I'll be slowly doing this as I'm a broke university student lol, so I'll be doing mods according to what my funds permit

^ Thanks man.
Yeah I know exhaust isn't going to be doing much for the car. I just want it for a cleaner look instead of the ugly stock muffler, and a better noise. Basically I just want it for the rice factor haha.
Get a magnaflow muffler. I used to have one and it sound really nice untill I got the header and a full exhaust with the cat and res delete. Sound awesome at idle but Shitty when driving around 2700 rpm. If I were you I would just get coilovers, muffler and be done with it.
Despite what anyone tells you, a freer flowing intake AND exhaust will help improve performance on ANY motor. More air=more fuel + air into the motor which = more power. Granted you have a 4 cylinder so it won't be a huge increase in power but it will be more. This will move your power curve into the higher rpms but you did say you were into for the "rice" factor.
Look into your local muffler shops. Find the one that specializes in "performance" mufflers and go with them. My local shop did a cat back exhaust on my car with a Magnaflow muffler and resonator for a very fair price. I think I paid around $485 for the complete set up, and I did NOT go with one of those big stupid tips on my car because I did not want to look like a ricer.
Better fuel economy as long as you're not stepping on the gas and more power when you ARE stepping on the gas. A better intake and exhaust even when you are not running a turbo or a supercharger will always make things run better.
Nice car, I really like your choice of wheels too! Not overdone and they look clean. Keep us posted on what you do to your car!!!! You might want to check out another site, not sure if they block it here or not but it is solaraguy.com.
Sweet car man!!!
As far as the Tokicos vs the KYB's...I have heard the Tokicos are a bit more stiff the the KYB's, but keep in mind, I have TRD struts on my car which are supposed to the be stiffest of them all, and they aren't that bad at all. You sound like a young guy who wants to trick his shit out, I would go with the Tokicos, some Tein springs and DEFINITELY get NEW strut mounts. Trust me on this one.

i guess that makes me ricer..

intake: if yr gonna go with an intake, don't spend too much on it because the 5s engine already breathes well out of factory-
exhaust: grab a style you like, usually- magnaflow is the choice for majority.
suspension: the 5s isn't gonna go anywhere very fast, i've tried h-tech/s-tech/B&G springs, KYB struts and JIC coilovers.. if i were you- the next step is straight to coilovers.
good luck with the ride! welcome and happy modding!

Hahahaha! You got me there man! I won't lie, I just don't like the look of the big mufflers and big tips! When I got my exhaust done, the guy asked me "You want one of those big tips on your car?!?!" and I said "No! That is exactly what I don't want! I want something that look like it was supposed to be on the car but I want it to add power at the same time". They then gave me a TRUE cat back exhaust system with 2.5 inch diameter tubing all the way back from the cat. Don't settle for a "bolt on" muffler.
Nothing wrong with making your car look like how you want it to look at all. I just prefer the low profile look myself. BesidesOne to Hate, I have already told you many times that I really like your car!
When it comes down to it, buy a GOOD QUALITY muffler like a Magnaflow, then go for the look that you want. I myself want one that cops won't look at and think "Hmmm, I wonder what he has done under the hood". To each their own.
As far as the cold air intake...you can buy a short ram and modify it into a "true" cold air intake that will increase performance more than the stock one. It just takes some research, ingenuity, and imagination! If they still offered the CAI extensions for my Injen I would already have one. Looks like I will have to make my own.
PS Hey One to Hate, do you have the black wheels on your car or the chrome/polished looking ones? IMO, the black ones look way better! JMO

- either SRI or CAI will work...neither do anything but add sound(and what a sound it is), which is why id stick with the SRI unless ya wanna build a CAI for piece of mind.
- i wouldnt even screw with a muffler...maby put a nice tip on there for looks if its possible but the engine sounds SOOOO good that a muffler almost always ruins it.
- get a TRD or whiteline RSB installed, like night and day handling.
- since your in canada, ya might be able to source a Gracia bumper which has built in foglights and look Ohy so sexy.
^ Oh yeah the gracia bumper is definately pure sex. I saw a jdm parts store selling two front ends for about $800 I think. Price didn't include painting, and not sure if it included installation as well. What do you think of that price?
Wheres the best place to find a whiteline RSB? their site? or is it possible to find them anywhere else? Also with the install of a new sway bar, am I gonne have to get new sway bar end links as well? those things are ridiculously overpriced. I've been quoted 65-76 bucks per peice at best, and one place quoted me 100 bucks a peice... >.>
