hey guys an gals... i got an 01 camry le, hate that ugly shifter knob, as im sure yall kno, the button is on the side and it had an o/d off button, ive seen a couple after market knobs with the o/d off button. anyone if its possible to change that ugly thing out with an aftermarket? also, do u think itd be possible to put a shift boot on once the new knob was is place? so anyone done anything like that to their 01 camry?
Yes you can take it off and put on an aftermarket one. I didnt feel like paying for the one that has a o/d switch built in so I extended the wiring and relocated it, using a toggle switch.

yeah, the one with the 0/d off is way too expensive. i had thought of relocating it myself. how hard is it to rewire? do u have any pics of how u did urs? id love to see if u do. thanks alot for the reply.
Sticky means, there is a thread that stays on the top of the forums and has a different colour. Sticky also stays at the same position in the forum even when inactive
If you want to relocate the O/D button, you'd need to cut and attach the two wires to a different button that you would install somewhere. Also... be careful after you remove the two screws on the back of the shifter. The shift button will basically fall out after you lift on the shifter. And there's a small spring in there that you don't want to lose.
Also... per this DIY, instead of yanking on the shifter to remove the wires... after you remove the first two screws on the rear of the shifter and pull up slightly AND remove the shift button, there should be a third screw hiding behind the shift button. Remove that, and you should be able to disassemble everything to a certain point, IIRC. Hope that makes sense.

This seems like a nice upgrade although expensive as hell.
No matter what, you have to cut the O/D wires? One topic says you do.
I'd have to disagree. $36(ebay) it isn't the cheapest, but the price isn't unreasonable either. It looks far better than others I've seen, and doesn't require drilling hole in the console. Notice the o/d button is on the shift knob.

if you do change out teh shift knob, dont be gehtto and just drop an aftermerkrt one on there. it is WAY too tall and leaves the bare metal shaft that looks horrible. I have done this twice and both times made the shifter look 100% better by cutting down the shifter shaft. it reduces the overall height by about 3 inches depending on the shifter you buy.
Thanks man, sorry for any dumb questions i might ask, im a newb to doing stuff to cars, and new to the forum too. thanks for ur help i really appreciate it!!
