3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so about a yr ago P0401 came up on my wifes 2001 and my wife had the EGR valve replaced (no input from me), problem came back very shortly after. no the car is up for inspection and i need to do something with it cuz it just wont pass. was going to change out the vsv (seems to be a common remedy) so i removed mine and bench tested it. when i hooked it up direct to 12v the solenoid activated and restricted air flow (i blew into it). i was really hoping that the test would have failed but now im sort of stumped and i dont really know where to progress from here.
the car runs fine but just wont pass inspection with the code up. was pondering just replacing all the vacuum lines on the system, can anyone tell me what size lines are typical on this car?
is it possible i did not have the correct vsv now that i think of it? i tested the one that connects to the side of the air cleaner box.
There's another, more commonly-failed VSV on the back of the engine. Well, it sits on the back of the intake manifold. I think I actually have one around here that I bought brand new from Toyota just a few months ago...
yeah those thingies are a bitch to reach in original location and as some friendly mechanic said they click click and at some point they stop (immobilizing the EGR valve)
I have a spare one too, used but tested good per FSM, can send cheap hehe.

But anyway, I've got an OEM one new (almost new, less than 5k miles) from Toyota. Bought it for $90 ish. Will sell for $60 shipped if you want.
don't want to spoil the deal, but new OEM from online dealer is $58 plus s/h and you can get free s/h from toyotapartsoutlet.com (charlotte, nc) this month.

On the camry's, if you replace the EGR valve, you should also replace the VSV (25860-74050) and the EGR Modulator (25870-74090). In doing so, you elimanate them as your problem. At all the Dealers I have worked for, that is what we did and it resolved 99% of the problems. Since your EGR valve has already replaced, I would replace those two.
cool, ill start with the vsv and hope that fixes it. im getting tired of dumping money into this pile for a problem thats not even really a problem, just a technicality. thanks
i don't think so. regulator sounds like modulator and that's not it (though it can be replaced together as it has filter in it - if it's bad it will be leaking too much vacuum).
on my '00 5s-fe the part number was 25860-74050.
check at: www.toyodiy.com/parts give it VIN number of your car and look for this keywords "valve assy vacuum switching" there should be just one named like that on 5s-fe. this will give you correct part number.
I think Toyota listed it under Emissions Components - Vacuum Valve, but that's for the EGR..

Ouch...
I had bought this before I knew about online dealers.
No, its not.
What you need is 25860-74050 and 25870-74090. You'll have to trust me on this. I have been selling Toyota parts for a very long time(30 yrs) and can tell you that eventually all Camry's will need all three. I sell to my tech as well as outside shops.
