4th Generation Making my camry a bit more interesting... Where do I start?

Hi all,

Bought a 2001 SXV20R Touring model V6 recently with 200000ks on the clock and a few things wrong with it.

Loving the car and the interior, spent some good money on replacing all 6 speakers, head unit and also installing amps and 2 JBL 12'' in a ported box.

Umm and ahhhed about investing in a TRD S/C, but realised even installing it would be a nightmare and I would have to import a lot of parts from the states.

Considered resselling her to make a quick buck, but i decided I'm keeping her. And now I want to make her a bit more fun...

Most people are surprised when you tell them it packs 143kws and I want it to show it in a few more subtle ways.

Purchasing a reco or low km engine anfd a new clutch to solve a few problems and to guarantee a bit more durability.

Then i was hoping to work on new exhaust (& exctractors?), maybe better injectors and maybe a bit more. Would like to avoid playing with anything more internal than valve timing.
Lowered, bigger rims are also in order.

Basically what I'm asking is I have seen lots of nice looking cars on here and was wondering? Where do I start? Where did you start? Any recommendations?

I have some mechanical background (always done my own repairs) , I have plenty of tools (dad's an ex mechanic) and money (working full time with zero overheads).

I havent purchased anything yet but id like to get started soon and was wondering if any of you guys would be willing to part with some performance camry wisdom and point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Evan, the new guy XD

Your first step is to post some pictures!

But find what you like about other peoples camrys and use it as a jumping off point.

Most camry work has to be custom, so get creative! A few members here are ridiculously creative. The first guy that pops to mind is iovaykind with all his lighting inventions.

I really like what twinjetguy has done with his supercharged gallery series camry. Ideally, in a perfect world that would be what i would go for, maybe with a TRD body kit. But the difference is he would have spent tens of thousands on his car, and i can't justify that much on a car that old. But ideally thats exactly what i would aim for, faster but not insane, better looking but not trying to compete with supras or skylines. A camry by definition, just a little nicer and a fair whack faster. Pictures coming by the way.

heres your TRD body kit....

Gen4 TRD Kit

things that are more worth the money are suspension components and visual things (rims, kits, lights). asside from that you have to pay pretty big to get performance parts. now if ya do want to take the leap and SC the car, then speak with ASG14, he has sent quite a few items to Aussieland and may be able tot help.

No, i have decided not to supercharge the car, save the money for other mods. At this stage, I'm thinking, new body kit, (maybe a matching respray to fix the few carpark trolley scratches etc from the paint). New struts and coils (lowering too) definately, reco engine and new clutch for sure. Then new exhaust, not just a cannon though, a proper cat back at the very least. Dunno where from there. That is a lot to do... Not impossible though.

I'm not even going to read all this. Start with SUSPENSION. More specifically, a TRD or Whiteline rear sway bar.

With the sway bar is it worth chasing down the TRD swaybar? Or will a generic brand do? (Hard to get TRD stuff in Oz)

Whiteline is probably better. It's adjustable, whereas the TRD is not.

I'll see what i can source in oz for simplicity, and go from there. Putting the leg work in to get a low km jap import motor and start there.

Whiteline is made in Australia, IIRC.
