Question 5sfe interchange questions

Hello, this is my first post here and I am new to Toyota Camrys. The vehicle I am working on is a 1997 Camry with the 2.2 5SFE. The engine has a rod hanging out the front of the block just like many other 2.2 engines I have seen. There are no reasonably-priced 1997-2001 engines around but there are affordable 1992-1996 engines everywhere. The car is in great shape other than the thrown rod. What are the differences between the engines that keep them from interchanging? What all parts would be needed? What fabrication is necesary? Would it cost less to spring for the more expensive 1997-2001 engines? Any input is greatly appreciated...

One thing you should look into is that there is a good chance it is illegal to put an older year's engine into a car. Also, do you have emissions testing where you live?

1997+ Camry 5SFEs are direct ignition. That's the biggest issue. Older 5SFEs use a distributor which is not compatible with your car's wiring.

Find a similar year Camry 5SFE.

The blocks could be the same, maybe just the heads and ignition stuff are different. well worth looking into if you could find a block cheap and use your engine parts on it.

I think in your case you need to spend much money for that. I'd tried it before.
