4th Generation beware of old toyota fuel gas caps - failed inspection

this morning my 1 year old gas cap in '00 solara 5s-fe failed inspection in NJ. I bought that gas cap online from toyotapartsoutlet.com last summer/fall at $15 or so when car was at 71k miles.

the whole car runs like new (no errors, all ECU tests passed), but they pull the gas cap out of it and connect to some vacuum/pressure hose with correct fitting. gas cap failed the test and so did my car (because of that).

unbelievable. I went straight to local dealer and bought another gas cap over the counter (thank god they had it in stock), paid $25, returned to NJ inspection/emissions station and voilla, gas cap passed (and so did the whole car LOL)...

the new one I got today locally has the part number 77310-06020 and it passed inspection regulations in my crazy state of New Jersey.

also there is some slight design difference right under the plastic cap between my 1yr old gas cap and the most recent one i got over the counter. perhaps it makes the difference somehow ...

The gasket failed most likely from a tear from cross threading or excess force (it's a $3-4 part) - the actual cap is still functional.

yeah, NJ is crazy about emissions and safety inspection, etc...

SilverSoarer, the gasket looks still brand new on this cap. nothing really faulty when eyeballing it. no cross thread either.

Somebody needs to Release the Kraken on these EPA dweebs. I mean if you rolled in there with *no* gas cap and a rag stuffed in the filler pipe, I could see them getting their panties in a bunch.

But you had a gas cap, it was screwed on, but nooooooo, that's not good enough. Let's put El Mondo Sucko Gauge on the perfectly good cap, and well shucks, it's 1/2 lb under some limit. Who sets these limits anyway ???

And from a practical emission standpoint, what possible harm could your car cause with a perfectly good gas cap in place, I mean really. WTF.

NBD, great pic too. It reminds me of one time I was in Oregon. I pulled into a gas station and went to gas up my car. Some fat chick came out waving her hands saying I couldn't do that. I looked at her, and said, of course I could do it, just watch. Then she gets in my face and tells me it's against the law to fill your own gas tank in Oregon.

Well being a foreigner from California, I asked why as she pumped the gas. She said that it was a safety law, and that a motorist in Oregon, sometime, somewhere, lit themselves on fire, then caused a fire in a gas station, and the nut-cases decided to pass a law not allowing anybody to fill up their own tank. You can never be to safe, don't ya know.

Anyway I mentioned that people in Oregon must be retarded, since for all its faults, California has maybe 10 times the population of Oregon, and nobody has figured out a way to blow themselves or a gas station up. Even if they did, it's like throwing a little chlorine in the gene pool.

She gave me a nasty look, as ugly fat chicks can do. And I drove off, making a mental note to fill up in Washington on my way back through so I didn't have to stop in Oregon, and risk being cremated in a gas station. You can never be too safe, don't ya know.

Sorry, I didn't know you were from there. Do they still not allow you to pump your own gas?? I'd go nuts if I had to wait for somebody to do it for me.

A friend of mine sent me this, and I'm going to get some self stick vinyl and print some bumper stickers tomorrow.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

haha, good pic exactly my emotions in the morning.

NJ does NOT allow motorists to fill up their tanks on their own too! you have to wait for the lazy gas station employee to fill it up for you (and watch him topping off the tank) ... all bull shit.

every other state south of here allows you to fill up on your own, but NJ noooo, You can never be too safe, don't ya know
