97 Camry Stalling in Drive

Have a 97' 2.2 LE that stalls when put in drive. No engine light, idles good, can put it in reverse and works fine. The other day i rolled it to about 1500 rpm and popped it in drive and it stayed running and moved but no power and top speed might be 20 mph. As soon as i lift off the pedal it stalls like if it were a manual trans and you popped the clutch with no gas. If the engine were at idle and you put it in drive it acts the same way just stops dead.

Thanks Dave

This reminds me of GM's torque converter solenoid issue. The solenoid would stay in the out (engaged) position, and kill the engine when stopping. You had two choices at that point, either fire the car back up, rev it, and slam back in to "D", or pop into "N", and repeat procedure. Or, unplug the solenoid, and run without O/D. I had a Corsica that did that. Maybe some of the guys like LynchburgCSI or 73sport can chime in here. I assume you have the A140E slushbox?

Inside the trans pan, if I'm not mistaken.
