Is the CV axle hard to replace?

95 4cyl Camry. My passenger side is about gone, need to replace it. Is it difficult to do yourself?

It largely depends on how difficult it ends up being to remove the axle carrier bearing. Sometimes they come out fairly easily, other times the bearing is severely rusted into the bracket. People have resorted to using an angle grinder to cut the axle off between the bearing and the transaxle, then hammering out the bearing.

If the bearing will not come out, the method I use is to unbolt the bracket (motor mount/carrier) from the engine, remove the top nut on the engine mount, lift the engine, then remove the axle all in one piece. It's a lot more work to do it this way, but sometimes it is necessary. A torch and a slide hammer will sometimes work for a seized bearing, but it can be difficult to get enough force in the confined space.

So yea it all depends on how hard it will be to free the bearing from the mount. If it comes out easily, the job is not that hard at all.

This thread confirms my suspicions, cutting the axle is the best option.

The axle into the diff has enough play to accept being pushed off center enough to get the mounts past the dowel pins. Just don't pry on the oil pan and break the seal.
