1998 Camry V6 Engine Knock

Have been experiencing engine knock at low RPM. Much more prevalent during hot weather and when the engine is under load (accelerating up a ramp). Had it in to the dealer several times and they could not ID the problem. This occurred for several years. Recently I got a check engine code of P0441 (bad purge valve). The engine knock strangely disappeared at the same time. I had the purge valve replaced free (under a warranty enhancement from Toyota) and the knock has disappeared. Dealer says they have not heard of this scenario before. Just FYI !!!!!

um ok.. p0441 is an evap code. even if you completely removed the evap and egr system your engine still wouldnt knock. Also no dealer is going to warranty a purge vsv on a 98 camry lol

Toyota was sued by the EPA and 1996-1998 vehicles received a warranty enhancement for 14 years/150k miles on their EVAP systems.

http://www.epa.gov/compliance/resour...aa/toyota.html

Also, the EVAP system enriches the fuel mixture, which makes the ECU reduce the injector pulsewidths during that time.

nice google search! Theres nothing in TIS about it. Show me something official from toyota then maybe ill think about warrantying evap components on old beat up toyotas!

And to the OP...unplug the connector on your purge vsv and tell me if your "knock" comes back

That comes directly from the EPA and Toyota HAS to honor it. The 1996s expire this year, 1997s next year, and 1998s in 2012, assuming you're still below 150k. Most cars will have more than 150k and are not under warranty.

Read the PDFs on the site.
