I would sure like to hear recomendations on this. I am thinking of putting on roof racks but thule and yakima want to sell you $500 worth of hardware to do it.

I am struggling with putting a $500 rack on a 15 year old car. The rack adn the kayaks would be worth more that the car LOL

I've got a bit of experience with racks.

To find out what you need, go to the Yakima or Thule website and use their build your rack tool. When you are done, it will show you all the parts and part numbers you need. Record those and shop around for deals.

You are right - new rack parts are pretty expensive. What I would recommend is buying the towers and bars used and then just getting the specific clips you need new. You can save a lot of money that way.

Good luck!
