I can't pump gas!

Hello all. Hopefully, I can get some help on this one. For quite some time now I have been having problems pumping gas in my 2001 Camry. Whenever I go to pump, the pump stops on me as if I have a full tank of gas, which I don't. I can't even get a gallon of gas without it stopping on me. It takes me forever to get a full tank let alone jut putting ten bucks in the tank. I have been told that it may due to the filler neck being clogged and that I would have to go to a Toyota dealer to get this fixed. I honestly do not want to go to a dealer, because I know it will cost me one arm and probably both of my legs. I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper alternative to fix this problem? Please help! Thanks.

Do you have a Japan or USA produced Camry? The first 4 digits of the VIN should tell you what country produced yer Camry.

Check yer charcoal canister and the over fill check valve...

Using www.toyodiy.com I came up with these part numbers:

77390D VALVE ASSY, FUEL TANK OVER FILL CHECK
77390-33011 MCV20, SXV20..JPP 1 $39.44

77740 CANISTER ASSY, CHARCOAL
77740-33120 MCV20, SXV20..JPP (08/1999 - 08/2000) 1
77740-33121 MCV20, SXV20..JPP (09/2000 - 06/2001) 1

Using www.toyotapartsales.com I came up with these:

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
7739033011 $35.32 $0.00 $25.49
Fuel system - Fuel system components - Check valve
Check valve 1999 - 2003

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
7774033122 $340.22 $0.00 $245.45
Emission system - Emission components - Vapor canister - All Japan built - 2.2 liter 2000 - 2001

Part number 7774033120 and 7774033121 was superseded by part number 7774033122.

This check valve is located on the top of the fuel tank. The hoses are connected to the fuel neck and to the charcoal canister.

Usually the cause of the charcoal canister failing is from overfilling the gas tank so the check valve fails and over saturates the charcoal canister. Are you the first owner?

Thanks for your reply! I believe that I have a Japan-made Camry. I am not the first owner of this car; it had about 54,000 miles on it when it was bought. Being that it's used, that may have something to do with this issue.

as a temporary work around you can try peeling off a little the rubber boot of nozzle while filling up the gas tank. it will help evacuate the air during fill up, so it doesn't shut off prematurely.

eventually you will have to drop the gas tank and most likely replace the over fill check valve and maybe the whole charcoal canister. I think the OFCV can go bad if someone keeps overfilling the gas tank (past the full "click") constantly and deliberately.

A common problem here could also be a clogged Vent tube from the canister to atmosphere stopping the air coming from the top of the tank past the valve and into the canister catching HC and venting the rest. spiders and other pesky insects like to build nests here. thats the first thing i would check and its an ez fix.
This hose is mounted at the rear of the veh on the drivers side of the canister in is tucked inside the rear suspension X member and can just be pulled out. its about 3/4 inch in diam. Hope this is your problem as the other two are either expecsive parts(canister) or dropping the tank to get to valve(labor).
