roaring noise!!! please help

Hello all,
I have a 2000 Camry Le with aprox. 179K. I recently hydroplaned and went off the road into a ditch during a bad rain storm, since then I have been hearing a roaring sound while driving, after reaching about 45 miles per hour and it increases in vibration and noise until about 65 at that time it is not as noticeable. I had my tires balanced but am still hearing the noise. Any ideas?

My first guess would be to look at your axles to see if anything is damaged or missing.

There are only 3 things on the driveline that can make noise
-Tires (Not roaring though)
-A bad CV joint (makes quick popping/clicking sounds)
-A bad wheel bearing (highest possibility)

Thanks Toyotapartsman but all looks well. Peshwa: we did a 12-6 and 9-3 test which resulted in no tug and pull could it still be the wheel bearings? Thanks for your reply

It certainly can be. If you have eliminated the other two. But it is hard to diagnose a vehicle without having it.

FYI!! MSRP on the Bearing is $71.65 in addition to the bearing, you'll need a new hub. MSRP on that is $138.88. Should this turn out to be your problem, want to let you know that I sell to TN members for 30% off MSRP plus I only charge actual shipping costs plus $1.00- $2.00 for materials. I don't over inflate shipping costs to make up for the discount, it is actual shipping cost plus $1.00 - $2.00. But whether or not you need it, or you even buy from me, don't ever hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need anything.

When you went in the ditch is it possible that you ran over, and therefore got stuck in your engine, a lion? That may account for the roaring noise as at around 45 kph the wind may be annoying him...

But in all seriousness I had a friend with a car that had a very similar sound and problem to what you are describing. It was definitely his wheel bearing. So I think the guys are steering you straight.

4th Generation

Hello,
Did you solve this problem already? I had a similar problem with my 2000 a couple of years ago after a snow/ice storm.

After the storm I started hearing a roar that started at 60mph and seemed to stop at 65mph??? The noise would occur at that speed range whether the engine was off or on, transmission in drive or neutral, turning left or right, slowing or speeding up in that range, and this occurred on all road surfaces... The wheel bearings, tires, and cv joints were all ok.

The problem ended up being the plastic cover under the car between the bumper and radiator support had been ripped off during the storm. It apparrently was a harmonic noise caused by the air moving under the car and was totally related to windspeed - not wheel or engine/transmision revolutiion!

Hope this helps.

roaring noise

Thanks to all who replied. It was in fact the wheel bearings. The rear to be exact. We replaced them both and "no more noise"
