1. sorry to hear man, it sucks when ya put a lot of time and money on something and it takes a crap on ya.

2. use this as an opportunity to get either another, better camry (coupe or 5 speed) on which you can use all thoes parts, or get a better car to mod.

3. in the words of Homer Simpson, "this is the worst day of your life....so far"

thanks man. i def dont want another wagon cuz the only reason i loved this one is cuz my grandma bought it new. and it hardly ran, and i brought it back to life. another wagon will not be the same. maybbbeee a coupe. but i would 100% want a 5sp...BUT i also would want 100% a v6. (dont exist iirc) ugh. im thinkin like gen 5 camry if i get lucky. and if my grandma even gives me my $6k that is for college.

Hmm if youve put 5-6k into it that engines gotta be newish and worth saving. Unless you live in the sticks a headgasket job shouldn't be more then 6-700 in labor on a v6.

I would DIY and remember in the future to never dump to much money into an old car, you never know whats gonna happen.

Think of it this way: which do you have more of? Time? or money? You're in high school, and probably not loaded, so you have more time than money. I don't know how much a gasket would cost, but it's cheaper than a new car. And you could probably knock out the labor over your thanksgiving break or something.

I bet you'll do like me, get pissed and look for other cars for a day or two, then realize how much you love the car and be willing to fix it.

You have other options. Have you considered calling junkyards to see how much they will charge for a motor? I bet you could find one for cheaper than $1100 and maybe you can sell your old motor to offset some of the cost.

If you already know you are going to be without a car for awhile then hold on to it and save your money up, you can fix it man. You have already put this much time and money into it so far, it would be a shame to give it all up now.

TO EVERYONE: i kno i can DIY, or get it fixed, or whatever... but the thing is... its just problem after problem problem after problem problem after problem problem after problem problem after problem. i need a reliable car. i mean, i probly will atleast try to DIY it since i have only $640 to my name. but then again, i dont want to attempt a DIY then have wasted my money. and plus... there is no DIY here on TN for it. and i would need a VERY detailed DIY. im not the best with engines.

Well any car you get is gonna have problems. Always. They're made to break down. Part of life is fixing it, and moving on.

thats where i am now, i can afford to finance a newer more suitable car with lower miles. BUT it will be something i can work on and is reliable.

chris makes a good point though. but its all up to you, if you can swing a new car and it will be a smart investment over repairs then get something new.

the best bet i think would be to NOT get a newer camry if you get another. the gen5 had alot more issues with both engines then the gen3&4. if you can find a low mileage, good condition gen3 or 4, not only will you have a VERY reliable car with plenty of mileage to get you through college with, but youll be fimiliar with it if things break, it will be a better car for the gen5 money, your parts wont go to waste, and your insurance will be lower because the car is older.

just make sure it's a coupe so you really fall in love

couldn't express it in better terms

look where i ended up after buying a newish/er coupe
now had to buy a new headlights wiring harness for a grand and will be replacing it myself to save on labor LOL
crs love to break down ... especially when you have no money to fix them haha, that's why this TN place is so great

swagger_wagon, as far as i can remember (and i never touched any head gaskets) the job is not SO terribly hard, you would need a garage for that, but i think you could tackle it over the weekend with proper tools... then send/drive the head to a machine shop for machining ... and the rest i think is re-installation with new gasket and studs/bolts ... maybe V6 makes it a tad harder ... but still, you ought to have more free time than most of us ... older pricks

there are some DIYs on the internet, google camry v6 head gasket replacement, i'm sure you will find something.

or another option as suggested somewhere else, get another camry v6 from same generation (shouldn't be more than $1k) and strip your wagon of all the parts and re-use them on the other car, then junk the bitch
