3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The headlights on the 3rd gen. Camry are laughable. I have good bulbs and clean lenses and the dim orange sodium-vapor street lamps are outperforming the headlights on this car. The high beam luminosity is about what I would expect from the low beams.
Does anyone else think these headlights are awful?
Im off to the store to buy a keychain flashlight that I can use for navigating dark roads.
maybe you need some more headlight fluid? j.k my headslights brackets were broken and the sucked. Bought a new depo off of ebay and what a difference. Inproper headlight adjustment can cause bad lighting.
My other car is a 1991 BMW 325i with sealed beam headlights. All the BMW guys complain about the stock sealed beam performance and upgrade to H1/H4 or the ellipsoid projector housings. I think I would be lynched if they saw how dismal the camry lights are. :P
im courious what the point of this thread is. If ya dont like the headlights...upgrade, thats what i and many of us have done. what will our opinions of them help? considering all that isnt wrong with the car, i will except the poor, early 90's headlight technology. if the BMW ever had headlight worse then a toyota, i would be surprised, ya know....cuz its a BMW.
eventhough you didnt ask for help with this issue, ill ask anyways. what bulbs are you using? do they ever dim when using other electronics in the car? is ther any corosion at any of the contact points around the headlight?
The point of this thread is to point out that Toyota dropped the ball on the headlight system design and to see if this issue disappoints other people here on the thread. The state of the electrical system is top notch. Wire resistance is within factory specifications, charging system is new, and the bulbs are OE recommended replacement Sylvania bulbs. Since this car is just a $2000 lumpy that we bought to replace my wifes 2001 Rav4 which committed suicide (electrical system consumed itself) I do not see myself putting any money into upgrading the headlights , although if it irritates me enough I will spend the $25 to re-wire the headlights with a relay system running directly off the alternator as I have done in other cars. I appreciate your advice and pointers though.
well i guess youll just have to live with your "lumpy" decision till you can test drive another set of good headlights, er, car. ive been in a lot of other cars that i would say have poor headlights, but they work. hell its a good excuse not to drive fast in the dark
all in all i agree that the lights stock are dimmer then i would like, it helped when i put in some silverstar ultras but if you dont want to spend anymore money on it then at least you can be happy that if your gonna complain about something, at least its just the lights.

Lately there have been quite a bunch of threads on headlights sucking. One word-- retrofit. Or buy the headlights I sell, and you can't be disappointed.

I know right? This thread came up while there are 2 retrofits for sale, one for the gen 3's (EEngineer's) and one for the 3.5's (Iovaykind's). Ironic ain't it? First night with my retrofit headlights yesterday. One word- Awesome

being as I am fairly new here...I tread lightly till I get to know people....
but on the lights...I will take what you call "sorry ass" lights over the poor performance I had on both my Acura Legends...(a 87 and a 91 so 2 different gens)...both were VERY sad and its amazing how much more light I am getting out of the toyota.....and I do plan on a retrofit/projectors/HID....

Yeah, my dad has a '97 RL and headlight performance is pretty poor, especially when compared with stock Camry.
One thing that makes a huge difference is where/time of day you usually drive. If you drive mostly in the city or on well lit highways, you don't really bother with good headlights. If you do a lot of country or excessive night driving, then it does make a huge difference...
