3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello all, new to the forum and just wanted to share a few pics and plans for the current build. The lucky car is a 1996 5SFE Camry with a 5-spd - and has that shade of green that is exclusive only to 1996 (meaning that finding a correct color hood for a 1996 Cam took me 3 years - why paint!)
Anyway, done a few things to her already but mostly the header/exhaust combo opened up the most power in the shortest amount of time! The intake manifold porting/extrude honing and polishing the TB helped after 4K RPM but is not noticeable in the lower ranges. Balance shaft delete - felt the 13lb reduction in weight immediately in the steering but any more power? Meh, can't really tell. But it did give me 1-1.5MPG extra in the city with almost 3MPG average on the highway - definitely worth it IMO.
A slow weight reduction (still in progress) started with of course the aftermarket exhaust upgrade. Steel bumpers were removed - this alone cut 51lbs!!! No radio (bring an IPOD), no speakers, no airbags, no heat shields or extra hardware. No spare or jack either - just bought new tires and rims which cut 6 lbs total even with the larger rims. Still working on polycarbonate windows, P/S delete, hardware materials selection and replacement - I have many cool ideas I wish to share
Am already a member of the other IMOC MR2 forum and have gained much excellent N/A info on the 5SFE but most of those guys like the juice or the boost, but that's just not my thing. My goal with this car is to have a 200WHP N/A 5SFE - I know some people are already laughing, but I don't see why I can't - don't think anyone has ever tried in earnest and have taken a lot of tips from Honda guys and anywhere else I can find them.
It's a slow process but I have many of the parts already - Ti 6.000" rods, Ti valves, shimless buckets, and more which will be posted soon. Just found out that I can't post any pics - still a mystery as to why. SO when the privilege is extended, I will share pics (what keeps me from posting pics?)

sounds like a nice car man. i dont think your goal of 200whp out of that motor is too out of range, but it will reqire a lot of work to get there. the only friendly NA motor we have is the 3vz v6. but that would require a swap and thats just not worth it.
Is this gonna be a track car? With most of the safety stuff you've taken off, it's not really a street legal car anymore...
Have you gutted the interior yet? Pulled all the carpet, headliner, sun visors, center console, seats (replace the driver's seat with a lightweight racing seat), all interior lighting and non-essential electrical wiring, heater core, AC system, passenger seat belts, vents and blower motor, and complete door hardware/panels out? Weld the doors shut? Remove all the mirrors? Pulled the cruise control system?
Going with a carbon fiber hood/trunk will help you big time in weight reduction.

Heads up... your paint color is on the 4th generation camry as well as a few other models. I would know... I had a 96 in green.
I'm interested to see what you've done. Whats the goal here? Track only racer?

I was about to ask about the mod to help with the steering wheel.. then only to realize taking off the balance shaft is probably illegal too. Always loved the lighter car feeling in terms of steering.
if your gonna track the car and can get your hands on it you could likely swap over the SE steering box(forget actually part name on theses) which has a tighter steering ratio...the ES300 may have this as well.

So this is a manual steering box? I would love to use it if so - less parasitic drag on the motor with further weight reduction!

There's the icon which looks like 2 mountains with a yellow background, but I don't know how to use it...
On the MR2 forum there is a "paperclip" icon which I use all the time, but this forum doesn't have it.
Is it because I am a NEW member with the FREE membership/ If so, I can spend a little $$ for an upgrade...

no still power, your not going to want a manual sterring box on a car this heavy. I have never seen how thses "steering boxes" are made up inside or if the term im using for this part is correct (im commin from OLD muscle cars) but what i have been told is tha the ratio is quicker on the SE and possibly es300. a check on the part numbers may help confirm that. this wont lighten up the car, but it will improve steering response.
here, look at "detailed application" le, es, xle racks are different from SE.
