something knocking in engine?

I just did a timing belt change in my wife's 2000 4cyl camry, water pump, oil seals (cam, crank, oil pump), idler, tensioner. STarted the engine up, and I hear something knocking or banging...any thoughts on what it could be. I was sure to line up the triangles when I did the oil pump oring on the oil pump pieces. I was careful to put both timing belt covers on correctly. Has anyone else run into this noise after working in that area ?

The fun never stops !

i had a banging noise happen to me as well after a timing belt change. for me, the tension on the timing belt wasnt strong enough so the belt was slapping the cover. i found the tensioning springs didnt supply enough tension for the belt so i had to help it a bit when tightening down.

hopefully its the same thing for you. no cost to fix, but will have to tear a lot of it back down.

now that im giving it more thought, i determined this was the problem by removing the upper timing belt cover and turning on the engine. even thought the belt felt tight when installing, i was able to see it bouncing around and slapping the lower cover.

I did a quick inspection and I tend to agree...it does sound like the belt slapping the cover...I don't understand it though...I put a new spring in from toyota ?? I will take of the cover and have a look...thanks for sharing your experience...I will let you know what I find.

got it

I took off the dog bone and mount, serpentine belt for alternator and removed the top timing belt cover...adjusted the tensioner again and carefully put the cover back on...sound was gone. It was the timing belt slapping the cover...I guess the cover was either on wrong or the belt was loose. Thanks for the info...on the road again !
