3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Probably, because the of the LED CHMSL on the spoiler. Their current draw needs to be measured differently.

OK....thats what I thought. I added the factory spioiler to my gen4 and the light on the dash is on. Guess I need to start tracking down some part numbers.....

I did this and the trick is to leave in the original 3rd brake light. Just take your two wires from the spoiler and shove them into the 3rd brake light connector (female end) and then slide the connector with the wires into the original socket it was in.
No more lights, no headache and no police officers saying youve got a burnt out brake light since now you have 4
I am having the same problem as Letsride. Any one find out about the different failure modules.

This isn't an option having the high mount brake light and the spoiler brake light just looks dumb.
Here's a hint for you ....most of the Toyota cars with the factory wing with the LED will use the same type of failure box.....ie; 89 up Supra, 93-96 camry etc.....
I got the one out of the '97 I took the spoiler off. Although it will detect a rear light out it will not detect if the spoiler is disconnected, but that's OK with me for now. I mean I drove for 25 years before this without a tail light failure warning light and survived. It is just nice that it doesn't come on all the time now.

I wouldn't know what value resistor or where to add it. The failure module from the original car (1997) with the spoiler only looks at the 2 brake light at the corners and the parking lights, at least I think. On the module it says 27W x 2, 8Wx4. I would guess 2 brake and 4 parking. The module from my 1999 said 27Wx2, 18Wx1, 8Wx4 , the 18W being the high mount, I think. Would there be even another module with 27Wx2, "?"x1, 8Wx4 with the "?" being the wattage of the LED's. This just gets more and more involved to just add a spoiler.

The ?x1 would actually just read "LED" on those modules.
My suggestion? Seek out the gen 4 FSM and figure out how to wire a dummy harness and replace the light failure sensor with that.

Even if he wired the LED spoiler to the taillight failure box, it would still act as if the high mount bulb was bad because the LEDs have a lot less resistance than a standard bulb. Running a 10ohm 25watt in-line resistor where the high mount used to be would make the sensor box think there was a 25watt bulb there.
The way its working with it simply disconnected is there is absolutely no resistance so its acting like a blown bulb and thats why the light stays on. It detects Resistance.
