Problem seating distributor (95)

I'm having trouble getting the distributor properly re-seated after replacing the O Ring on a 95 Camry. It's going in fairly easily until its about 3/16" (a hair more than the width of the O-Ring, so the O ring isn't preventing it from going in) out, then it refuses to go in any further. From the feel of wiggling the rotor it seems like the tabs are in end of the shaft. ( it wiggles slightly but won't turn. Also, if I manually crank the engine forward the rotor moves with the engine)

Has anyone seen this before? Is there some trick to this?

Any help would be appreciated!

This is a 4 cyl camry, btw.

Are you sure the old O ring isn't in there still?

Git a camera and snap a piccie of the opening. You might be able to see something with the digital piccie.

The notch in the end of the cam is offset from center slightly so rotor will only go in one way. Are you sure you have rotor in the same position as it came out? Try turning rotor 180*.

huh. im assuming you are referring to the o-ring that is around the outer shaft that slides into the top of the head. i dont think the back of the distributor sits flush against the head. then again, maybe this is why mine has a perpetual slow leak now even after a new o-ring.

I tried it both ways. I goes slightly further in in one orientation. I assume that is the correct one..

I didn't pay too much attention when I was pulling it out, but it sure seems like it was either flush or very close too it before. As it is now, it looks like it will leak oil like a mother.

I felt around inside and there doesn't seem to be anything that would obstruct the distributor, but I'll try a camera tomorrow.
