3rd Generation Cannot fill up gas tank at the pump!

Hey guys I ran into a problem today that hopefully you all can help me out on.

Some background information. Recently I changed my gas filler neck and the two lower hoses that went a long with it. Installation was a breeze since I found a DIY on here

I go to get gas today and I guess there was too much pressure in the tank or something because it wouldn't let me fill up my tank of gas. all the gas came right out the top where I was filling it. I would pump some slowly and nother happened then all of a sudden the car would just spit out the gas.

This isn't the first time since I have changed the filler neck though, I filled it once before with no problem and it didn't leak or anything.

So my question is what the heck is going on with my car that it will not allow me to put gas into it? I have tired two gas stations and the second one had the vapor guard so it didn't leak but the nozzle kept clicking off after a few seconds.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Are you sure that its not completely full already?

Hose is kinked or something is clogged.

Haha yeah I'm sure it isn't full already but thanks for the thought. I doubt the hose is kinked or clogged since I hear the suction when I remove the gas cap.

I'm going under the car tomorrow so I will see what I find I guess.

Keep the thoughts coming!

Not sure since I haven't been inside a gas tank, but isn't there a flapper valve to prevent spillage when you roll a vehicle over? Maybe yours isn't flapping away during a fill up. Rusted shut? And, is the tank venting properly when you fill? You might just be pressuring the air in the empty tank until the air pressure decides to puke fuel back at you.

check the overfill valve (if i remember the name correctly). if it's broken it will not allow you to put gas in because of air pressure buildup during fill up.

this valve is somewhere between the filler neck and the tank. once it opens up it allows venting, if it's stuck closed it will not allow venting.

have you tried peeling the filler's rubber boot while filling up? does the pump still click back?

You have a bad fuel tank overfill check valve or you've pinched the return line from that valve.

Yeah I believe it is when I remove the gas cap I hear the suction like normal.

If this is on the new filler neck then I would assume it is working properly but I'm not sure.

Yeah I will check the lines out now.

This is all good advice thanks guys! I am going to go under the car now to check it out. I planned on removing the two lower lines and seeing if the filler neck and vent line is clogged but after that I have no other ideas on what to check. Are you guys saying that there is a valve in the vent line or in the tank I am a little confused about that.

Always open to new thoughts I will check back in after I am under my car. I'll keep you all updated!

So I found the problem, got gas and its all better now! A little embarrassed to say but I left the vent hose an inch longer than it should have been and the vacuum in the gas tank caused the line to collapse on its self. So after I cut the hose to the right length it was all better

Thanks everyone for the responses!!
