3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This year, I have been going road-trip crazy. Each time I take a road trip its about 700-900 miles each way....and Im already planning another.
Its just that Im going thru alot of transistioning and now Im trying to head someplace where the weather will be milder for the winter.
Im just kinda getting scared with all the driving...thinking I may be pushing my luck. But everything is going so smooth otherwise. Im at about 198,000 now. I still cant figure out the ticking noise seemingly coming from the transmission, but that started a couple thousand miles ago and hadn't had much in the way of issues, but it still concerns me. All fluids have been changed out too and are new.
These cars are reallly reliable. Thats why there are sooooooo many gen 3 and 4's around. In my school parking lot it probally is one of the most common cars.
Just keep up on maintenance and dont worry to much. With that type of mileage and distances you might wanna have a AAA card, but thats the only real precaution I would take.
look, the more miles you put on the car the closer it will be to failure, period. the only way to prolong that is to drive less or maintain more. the less your able to do either of thoes, the closer the inevitable will get. some of us are lucky and can go 250K miles or more without serious problems, some of us get smacked with a ton of it within the 100Ks.

Is this a subtle way of telling him time for a newer ride?

Noooo. Pretty sure Bird is trying to say that every car has problems eventually. Just a fact of life!

I pull 1000 mile round trips with my car at least 3-4 times a year, no problems here. Just keep up with maintenance. But yes, all cars will die eventually, it's just a matter of when. And don't drive the hell out of your car either, that makes a big difference.
Best example I can think of, my car, 225K miles, looks great, factory compression specs and smooth transmission. My friend's '96 Corolla, 192K miles, the car burns oil like a mofo, the check engine light is on with an unknown problem, the O/D light is flashing and the car barely engages, and the body is rusted to hell. What's the difference? He drove the car like a crazy idiot and didn't maintain it, I drive like a granny and maintain it every chance I get.

Does the ticking increase in frequency with vehicle speed? What oil do you use in the engine? ATF?
Depending on the temperature range, you might want to go with Motorcraft synthetic blend oil 10W-30. Great prices at Walmart.

If anything, long highway trips are less stressful on your car's components than short trips.
For example, doing one 700 mile trip is generally kinder on the car than doing 700 one mile trips. Everything is up to temperature and if you're just cruising, there's far less wear and tear compared to constant stop starting.
These cars are really hard to kill - I put about 25-30K miles per year on my Gen3 and I am not a very patient person when it comes to getting from Point A-B
Like everyone else said - just keep up with the maintenance and you should be fine...mine will turn over 304K this weekend
