Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
okay i have a 94 camry.
a few years ago the reverse light stopped working.
i found the broken wire in the trunk lid and fixed it.
this time, i checked the wiring again, and it looked fine.
now what? r on the dashboard lights up.
its a 1156 bulb right? the same as the turn signal light?
One thing to check, the reverse light does not work at all, or does not work when the car is in reverse gear. Sometimes the linkage is off, and the light will come on for a split second when you are "in between" gears. If that is the problem, report back, or search for the solution here. Or maybe not, like nevermind, cause if the R on the dashboard is working, then I think the linkage must be correct.
so i have an automatic, where exactly is the sensor/switch that detects the reverse light. i looked on the tranny today, and while i saw some connections, nothing that looked like the reverse switch.

I'm now thinking my advice was wrong, because if your R light is working. But maybe its still worth checking. if you have an assistant to watch the rear lights or fold down the rear seat, and pull the reverse light out of its socket, you could test if the lights come on when you are in between gears, or when in reverse and pull back on the gear handle.
I had that problem. There are threads on here where people fixed it by cleaning a switch on the transmission. I also didn't see it, and it felt like a dirty job. I fixed mine from inside the car by adjusting the linkage there. I've got a thread that describes the process.
Can someone tell me where the reverse light backup switch is on an automatic camry 94 le 2.2? I think on the tranny somewhere, or is this just for 5 speed? Any photos in a DIY section somewhere? I need to fix my reverse lights asap.
Okay,R does not work either. Then my experience is like this. First change the bulbs in the rear. They are cheap. Before reinstalling the bulbs into the where the lens would be fold the back seat down so you can see the bulbs hanging down. Get into the car, and shift into reverse. If the newly installed lights do not come, on jiggle the gear shift lever, and see if the bulbs come on for a second while the shifter is being jiggled. If they do, I've got the fix, so come back and report.
[QUOTE=camrybartockus;3343312]no go on any light, must be safety swicth as i have checked wiring harness in trunk too. can i repair it somehow - or off to the junkyard?[/QUOTE
I don't know, I;m not that much of an expert, but I had a problem that sounded similar, and was able to fix it. I have never had an issue with the safety switch. but before doing something difficult and expensive, I'd continue to ask questions.
thanks for the pointer judge. i may try one more time to see if i can get it to light up by jiggling the shifter. the swicth is actually pretty easy - and i am sure i can find one at the scrap yard - however - i must get to the root of the problem. ill get back to you again if i have the same issue you had.
Do a search for PNP switch. Park neutral position. The grease in them gets old and stops making contact. You can pull it off, take it apart and clean it up.

thanks for this suggestion it worked. i was actually going to take it right out - even after i had 3 bolts off i could not get lever off and it would not come off. anyway - not having wd 40 with me, i sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner on wires and switch. i also manually played with transmission swicth, loosened it up. started it right up and the r on my dash appeared again as well as reverse lights. amazing!
if anyone else tries this - i would reommend reinstalling the cable in L gear, not P. of course adjust transmission swicth accordingly.
