Engine is out..what would you replace?

my moms car needed a new engine (tapping from cyl 1, 172k, believed to be main bearing).

Got an entire junked 99 camry with low miles - both engines are resting on the mounts, ready to come out.

I plan to replace the following while the engine is out

Timing Belt
Tensioner
water pump
mounts

Am I missing anything obvious that would be easy to do now, instead of later?

Thanks

You might as well replace as many seals as you can on the new engine.

You might wanna take a peak under the oil pan and valve cover to make sure your new engine isn't junk.

If cash is an issue I would leave the mounts from the low mile engine. They tend to last a while.

oil pump seal, rear main seal, thermostat, spark plugs.

It probably doesn't need the rear main, but it really is a pita to do later.

The thermostat I recommend because they have a tenancy to not work so well after sitting not used for a long period of time with the rubber seal drying out.

I've made this mistake before. Just replace EVERY seal. It's a billion times easier now. Even the rear main. If you don't, luck will have it they start to leak after you put it back in.

I would also do all the gaskets. Again, it's a lot easier right now.

In addition to what's been said, if it's a 6, I'd do the valve cover gaskets. On a 4, I'd do it if any leaking shows. Access is easy later on.

On a 4, the VSV for EGR can be a pain to access. If it's on the new engine, test it--or go with your old, working one. Clean EGR and TB.

Thanks everyone, and esp JohnGD.

took a couple of pictures:

Overall, not too bad - had one seized exhaust bolt that I had to cut (in a tight spot) and one very fussy CV axles that didn't want to come out, other than that, it was smooth sailing.

You're welcome!

Looks like the valve cover gasket is already leaking and sending some oil down the back of the engine (firewall side).

It may be a good time to replace the fuel filter (watch for seized lower flare nut that can twist the fuel pipe!).

And with the transmission out too maybe drop the pan and replace the strainer and wipe clean the pan/magnets.

ummm, in addition to the leaking cover, the majority of that is the inner pass side boot (split) and slinging grease every which way.

The new(er) engine is now out of the donor car - I start swapping pieces over tomorrow
