3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm still getting this gas smell blowing into my car and I still can't get it figured out; what I do know is that it has something to do with the EGR system.
By all means, DO NOT SUGGEST TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY.
Anyway, my car is running rich and I believe this problem, as well as leaking valve seals are causing this. That aside, I can't find the damn TVV!!! I looked everywhere. The manual says its on the water outlet and where it should be is blocked off by casting. My guess is that the TVV is actually the valve that is attached to the top of the charcoal canister... maybe?
At this point I'm debating whether or not to clean the EGR stuff in trying to solve this problem..
Any help please!
You can check the valve by warming up your engine to normal operating temperature, and then increase the RPM's to 3000RPM. Check to see if the valve supplies vacuum to the EVAP canister.
follow your EVAP lines and you should find your TTV hope that helps.
Its never a bad idea to clean your EGR Valve either
If your TTV is stuck open you will get a lot of gas and it will run rich, and it will also sometimes stall or bog down at idle.

And the TTV is actually located on your coolant pipe on the right side of your motor. has two vacuum lines hooked into it
That was what I was talking about; that is the water outlet. My sensor is not there. All that exists there are two sensors, one for coolant, and I can't remember the other one (it's gray.) I'll have to take a picture.
I followed the vacuum hoses and I assumed it was the blue unit that is on top of the EVAP canister. I put seafoam in the lines so it would run into the valve and the results proved to be better; smoother idle (before it dropped from the regular 800 to 600 intermittently), smoother shifts, less bog down, less hesitation.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I may be looking into getting a NEW OEM one depending on what I can find out.

hmm . that is odd I will have to check my other camry's to confirm that they dont have a similar setup as you. You should take a picture of your charcoal canister. What happens if you fill your tank up? Does it purge out the Charcoal Canister ?
The conditions actually doesn't matter in this case, it's always purging. Every time I drive my car, I'm getting this odor blowing into the car.
I popped the hood today and started the car and it's definitely coming from somewhere around the canister and the EGR stuff, I can't tell exactly where though.
I also went and did the OBD2 check a couple hours ago and apparently my o2 sensor is bank 1 is pretty much done and I'm leaning out in bank 1 - p0171 (the error code was an existing problem, but not the o2 sensor being bad.)
Anyway, box 1 labeled in the picture is where the Haynes manual and your picture says the TVV is supposed to be.
Box 2 is what I put seafoam into with little results as posted in post #5.
+1 on cleaning things before replacing them. Things love to get dirty... just the nature of emissions systems.

Eh, another project that I don't want to get into... lol
I'll probably do it in the next couple weeks. Thanks
lol that's how im feeling about my rebuild right now, because I know i am going to have to start throwing money at it once it reaches the machine shop tomorrow
But I will be happy once I get it done and have a spare motor so when one of my camry's start getting tired, i can swap it in and rebuild the next motor
