3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
In the morning, my car just won't go! I thought it was the shifting, but it takes about 2 miles for it to get going. I can do about 20, but that is it. I try to kick it down, but it won't go. Any suggestions???
We get a few of these threads every time winter starts kicking around.. don't run your car that heavily.. either let it easy when you first turn it on or let it warm up a bit.. the car itself won't let the transmission go into overdrive without the oil being warm enough. there's nothing wrong with the car, so that should at least be good news

Because your oil isnt warm (thin) enough to engage into Overdrive. I own three toyota camry's and all 3 of them do this.
You could waste money on purchasing a filter and changing your shift solenoids but it will still do this (although if you havent changed the filter in a while it may be a good idea) Try putting the car into neutral to warm it up faster.
This is stricly for emission reasons. Preventing OD will keep the engine at a higher RPM thus speeding up warm up times. The faster the engine achieves closed loop control, the better as far as pollution.

Well, I guess it's good to know it is not my engine or tranny! I just changed to 10w40 due to it using oil, so thicker oil will make this early morning more noticable, correct?

A thicker oil in the motor will not affect how the transmission shifts. It will still shift into Overdrive once it achieves a certain temperature.
If your motor was using oil why did you just put a thicker oil into it ? The only thing you could really achieve there is you may see higher oil pressure. it will still use oil.....
Where is it using oil at?

It blows blue smoke in the morning and it is usually down quite a bit after about 1500 miles. It has 217k on it, 1994 v6.
Nice to see your over 200k
Sounds like your Valve stem seals are going bad since you are getting a blue smoke in the morning. It could also be other things as well, but since you have over 200,000 miles your valve stem seals are probably cracked and leaking. I've heard of people adding additives to their oil such as motor honey, and STP Smoke Treatment, but I fray away from those methods.
off-topic
How is the power on that V6 camry?? I've been thinking of doing a V6 swap on my 93 camry.

1994 is the wrong V6 if you want to build a v6 for up to 350whp.
