3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My father and I installed all 4 new struts on my vehicle. The front right strut makes a noise ONLY when the wheel is turned in that direction. I switched both front struts and ruled it out to be coming from the right strut, because the noise traveled with the strut. What could be the problem here? It almost sounds like something is loose (bolt or something).

Top nuts torqued to spec? Did you replace the strut mounts? Is the spring seated properly with ALL rubber components in good condition?

Yes we actually replaced the top mount for that strut because we lost a few of the bearings in the old mount. As far as the spring, I'm pretty sure it's seated correctly. You know, it's weird... Brand new KYB struts and after a thousand miles or so, they don't sound like they first did when we installed them. Especially the rear struts. The rubber looked like it was in good condition, however, you never know. They might need to be replaced on that one strut.

well, i pulled that strut apart today and found a bearing to be missing from the mount! i don't know how the hell that could have happened, it was a brand new mount. i didn't know what to do so i just evened them out as much as possible and applied mucho grease.

Why not return the strut mount? Just out of curiosity, who manufactured your mount?

when i replaced the strut mounts, strut on my 99 camry, i had to buy the bearing separately from toyota. good thing the toyota dealer is walking distance from my house.

because i don't have any time to at the moment. not only that, but they can try telling me i lost the bearing myself. i believe it was a Gabriel mount.

well i kind of evenly spread them out so it looked like it wasn't missing the bearing. it was only missing one so there weren't any significant gaps between each bearing. whatever i did, the noise hasn't come back.
now the question is, would one missing bearing cause the strut to make a crunching noise when turning the wheel?
