It's not, but it uses a transverse powertrain layout which is the same as a typical FWD layout. Since it's mid-mounted, it drives the rear wheels.

Also, the S53 isn't used on the MR2, the S54 is. The S53 was used on the 1990-1993 Celica and prior. For 1994-1999, the Celica also used the S54.

The S51 was used on the 3SFE/5SFE Camry up until 2001, not the S52. Toyota only changes the end number if a change in actual gear ratios takes place - the final drive doesn't count. For example, the S51 and S54 have completely different gearsets. Another example is the E350 from the tC and the E351 in the Camry; the E350 uses a 0.775 5th while the E351 uses a 0.731 5th.

(S52 5spd, FWD)
-CAMRY & SOLARA 6 cyl 3.0L 1992-93
-CAMRY & SOLARA 6 cyl 2.5L 1988-91
-CAMRY & SOLARA 6 cyl 3.0L 1993-99
-CAMRY & SOLARA 6 cyl 3.0L 2000-01

These are COMPLETELY inaccurate.

First off, the 2VZ was mated to the E52 or E56F2/E56F5 (AWD), then the 3VZ moved to the E53 (updated synchros and ratios). The 1MZ received the 1995 MR2's E153 with a longer final drive ratio for 1997-2001.

Typically, V6s have always used the E series transaxles, which are designed to take the extra torque. The same is true for supercharged or turbocharged 4 cylinders and AWD/4WD vehicles.

I also know for a fact that Celica's use the S51 trans because I got an overhaul kit for mine and when I had to find it, I had to search and pretend my car was a Celica.

I don't want to lock or delete this thread... I'll just add a disclaimer. Just take a look at the wikipedia pages for each car. They're usually right. And you can always ask for specific info here!

Celica's use the S53 up to 1993. That is, it uses the S51's output shaft and pinion gear for a 3.944 differential ratio. The gear ratios are completely different though, but they're pretty close to the S54. All S series transmissions of similar years have the same internals - just different gears/ratios.

im still amazed there's this much discrepency (sp) in stuff thats 15-20 years old... the way i see it
S51=Camry (long ratio box no questions asked)
S53=Celica
S54= MR2/Celica (different second gear ratio compared to S53 and The FD changes for the MR2 dont quote me i have to look it up)
E52=2VZ (Camry ES250)
E53=3VZ (Camry Es300)
E153 1MZ/3sgte (MR2, Camry FD's are different.)
i wanna go so far as to say no S52 exists. sorry for the redundancy...
