The book said to pack the pump with petroleum Jelly before putting it back together to help the pump prime itself. I did as the book recommended. How long should I go before changing the oil that now has Petro-Jelly in it?

i think that you would be safe with running it until your next scheduled oil change, but if its worrying you its no problem to just change the oil right away
