Best BRAND? Best COMPOUND? Vague questions make me sad. There's also been about 298238209309 threads on brake pads. Search if you'd like to read up on previous discussions.
Anyways, Hawk HPS and Brembo Ceramic pads seem to be VERY popular among those of us that want something performance oriented that isn't going to kill us with brake dust. Upgrading to stainless steel lines is also another GREAT way to upgrade your stopping power and pedal feel.

you may also try Akebono Street Performance (e.g. from the tirerack.com) for front application or even if you are lucky maybe for the rears too (if we talking discs). stopping power comparable with Hawk HPS, less dust as they say (will personally see in 1k miles or so)...
otherwise Akebono ProACT are good ceramic "standard" pads.

Best stopping power for street, or weekend driving camp?
I use Hawk LTS in my Camry now and will probably get HP+ next time.
Just ordered a set of EBC Yellow stuff for the front of the Highlander.
Hawk and EBC have always served me well.
Don't blindly fall for "ceramic" is best mentality. There are great ceramic pads and cheap ceramic pads.
I prefer stopping power and could care less about dust or noise. I miss good ol' noisy and dusty brake pads. It means they're working!!!!
With brake pad companies being bought/sold constantly, its hard to follow what a good pad is these days. Stick with a name brand and read all reviews you can find.

I do know what pads DON'T have the best stopping power. Generic auto store brand brake pads (ex: duralast, master pro) Don't get me wrong, they are fine for everyday driving but after a few hard stop; Bye bye stopping distance, hello brake noise, fade, and smoke.
I have some Akebono pads and their alright. They are wearing amazingly, so far I have 20kish on then and that have 2/3 life left. Im not joking.
They can get squeaky at times since their made out of a hard compound. Ive tried everything to quiet them down and its acceptable now.
I have hubcaps so I cant really comment about the dust, but it doesnt seem bad at all. I would stress not using these on turned rotors. They will warp.
I have Akebono SP in front and Akebono ProACT in rears on my 02 solara 1mz-fe. i turned all rotors (they were still OEM), because I want the most out of the brakes (also flushed the brakes system good). stopping power is amazing. i don't care if rotors got warped in next 20k miles or so, I will just get new ones, actually wanted to get new ones upfront but first wanted to save some money and see how turned rotors perform.
It's not worth it to install new pads on grooved rotors, i know because I installed Hawk HPS on unturned OEM rotors (just flushed brake fluid) in 00 5s-fe solara (with rear drums, just adjusted them to be snug). stopping power of those Hawk HPS is much less than on my 02 akebono setup.
I'm actually thinking about turning the front rotors for Hawk HPS in Spring, but am afraid of squeaking (now they are quiet and had them for like 10k miles).
one thing I can tell though, Hawk HPS over time start dusting a lot and color of that stuff is nasty (brown rusty) ... requires a car wash at least once a month to keep things clean (i don't bother usually though haha)...

Not to hijack a thread but my Duracrap pads are dusting like crazy. After I cleaned my wheels and a trip to Wal-green and back; there's a good layer of dust on it. Is that normal after 8 stops? Because I can exchange it at Autozone, is the Duralast gold (not the Cmax) any better?

I haven't tried the Gold, but I currently use the Gold Cmax.
Pretty much dustless.
