Camry 94 LE sputttered

My Camry 94 LE 4 cylinder today did something strange. At around 20 mph (30 kph), it suddenly started sputtering and stopping, leaping froward a bit and not going above 30 mph (50 kph). The rpm needle was swinging between 1000 and 1500 rpm wildly and the speedometer went upto 60 mph (100 kph) though the speed was only 30 mph (50 kph). I pulled over with effort, stopped the car, turned off the engine. On restarting, the car was fine. What could be the issue?

Weird, maybe a sensor cause a misread to the ECM? But if it's running fine now, then no worries. just check for loose electrical connections and vacuum hoses.

Just a guess here, but it could be an ignition coil on its way out; or a short in the coil pack itself. Maybe one or more of your wires intermittently shorted on something - hard to say with electrical stuff unless it happens again...
