Talking DIY : Door panel Removal and 20% Tint VIDEO

Hey guys, I decided to record me installing my 20% tint I got today on a window. I figure it could also be useful for someone who wonders how to remove a door panel too, because that's how I install my tint

Tools Needed to remove Door Panel:

Flat head screw driver
Phillips head screw driver

Pop all the screw hiding clips off the door. (2 in front, 1 on arm rest, 1 in side tray). Remove all screws. On the back of the door panel, there are two clips holding the door in place.. Using the flat head screw driver push the center circle of the clip in so its recessed and then pry the outside edge outwards. Once all screws and clips are removed, put the flat head on the bottom edge of the panel and pry outwards.. once the door pops out a little, grab it with your hand and pull the bottom out first popping all clips out. Lift door panel off of the door. To get the plastic Handle surrounding off, Pry with the flat head screw driver just above the lock mechanism up and pull the top out first, Then push below the handle downward and pull the bottom out. Pull handle open, and pull the plastic off

Tools Needed To Apply Tint:

1. Something hard and flat to press solution from out underneath tint. I use a credit card
2. Soap Solution : 3% Johnsons Baby Wash ; 98% Water

Clean window Thoroughly with the soap solution and a non lint rag. Spray the trunk lid or wherever your removing the tint from the film with the solution first, Lay the tint (Tint Side Down) onto the sprayed area. Remove the tint from the filament and spray the sticky side of the tint. Keep in mind its very important to not touch the sticky side!

Grab your tint from the non sticky side and spray the window you just cleaned with the solution. Adjust the tint so that one edge goes under an edge of the window (The tint will slide on the solution temporarily). Make sure to leave a 1/4" gap at the top of the window.

Once your tint is partially in place, flip the underside of the tint up using a piece of clear tape to grab the sticky side. Roll window all the way up and push the bottom side of the tint into the door as well. Now using your thin plastic, push the soap solution out from underneath the tint starting from center working your way out. Use a cloth to swipe the plastic off to help see where you need to squeeze more soap out. Continue process until all pockets are gone. Let dry for 72 hours in temps between 40 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

Continue process for all windows.

Here's a crappy video i made to show all this happening:

^^I'd only apply tint in warmer than 60 degree weather.. helps with the stickiness and overall quality of the tint job

Good job though, wish I had a video like this to watch before I tinted all my windows though I didn't have precut tint, which makes it so much harder loll

Yeah, some people say that using pre-cut tint isn't good because it isn't cut exactly but I've tinted many vehicles using pre-cut and haven't had a problem .

And yes, it helps to be in temps not freezing That's why my 95 is sitting in the temp. controlled shop now

So, what about the back window? I guess it's either with pre-cut...but I have no idea what to do for the rear. I don't want to make it in strips.

The back window is Pretty Tricky. You can either get the pre-cut or cut your own. Make sure to start from the middle of it and work out though. If you don't you will get bubbles in it. Put lots of the solution behind it as well. If you have two people it makes it far easier because one guy can hold it and the other can squeegee it.

I've read that because of the curvature of the window you can't use a solid piece, it had to be strips. Was yours a solid piece?

Mine was one piece .. i dunno, i guess it would be easier to do it in strips. I think that doing it in strips would be kind of difficult though because they will need to line up perfectly without overlapping or gaps in between. So you might have dark spots or light spots depending on how careful you are.

Mine was one piece, I put it up and sprayed the crap out of it to make sure it wouldn't stick, then I started squeegeeing and eventually it was stuck. Then I used a razor to cut it so it was the right shape. It's tough, took me about 2 hours with my dad's help. Just go slow and don't rush or else it'll come out worse than not doing it.

Perkins that's what I was thinking.

Isaac, I read that doing it all one piece will make it look funky in the four corners because the tint crinkles up a bit. Maybe it's just flexible enough?

interesting

what brand of tint is pre-cut? where do you buy it from, any local parts store?

It sucks here in NJ that you can't (legally) have front side windows tinted at all ...

also another thing. Is there any cheap fix for bubbles on rear window tint? this one is worst for working on, especially on coupe car and right this one only has bubbles , rear sides still look good...

EDIT:
never mind, I think I found a cheap fix (parked in sun, needle, spray bottle and cc).
