Very Weak Spark from my92 Camry 5SFE

On my 92 Camry 5SFE. I just replaced the water pump timing belt, and all the seals... After installing all of this the car won't start, the timing is set on point, I have Strong fuel pressure, but when I pulled the plug wires to see if I was getting spark, it looked very weak. I checked everything I could think of I notice on the conector on the side of the dist it was broken. My question is could that be the cause of the weak spark going to the plugs? I pulled the dist out and notice the wires that lead to the coil where indeed pinched or maybe broken.. Tell me would you guys replace the Dist or not? Or could it be another issue?

Make sure your timing is set to the compression stroke on cylinder 1. If your at Top Dead Center and you cant feel the piston through the spark plug hole, rotate the belt 180 degrees so that its on the compression stroke and you can feel the piston with a straw or flat head screw driver.

Your car will not start if your timing is set wrong

Just please make sure if you use a flat head screw driver to not get it jammed because it will damage your motor

Heres a cutout of a motor so you see what im talking about:

Note: This is not a 5sfe

CHECK POWER SUPPLY TO IGNITION
COIL AND IGNITER
1. Turn ignition switch to ON.
2. Check that there is battery voltage at
ignition coil positive (+) terminal.
CHECK RESISTANCE OF IGNITION COIL
Resistance: Cold ------------------- Hot
Primary 0.36–0.55 ------------ 0.45–0.65ohm
Secondary 9.0–15.4 kohm --- 11.4–18.1 kohm

if bad, replace the ignition coil

===

CHECK RESISTANCE OF SIGNAL
GENERATOR (PICKUP COIL)
Resistance: Cold --------------- Hot ------------ G1 and G–125–200ohm 160–235ohm
G 2 and G–125–200ohm ----- 160–235ohm
N E and G–155–250ohm ------ 190–290ohm

If bad, replace distributor housing

===

CHECK AIR GAP OF DISTRIBUTOR
Air gap: 0.2–0.5 mm (0.008–0.020 in.)

===

Spark plug wires should have :

Maximum resistance:
25 kohm per cord

If out of spec, replace

===

Try another ignitor

===

CHECK IGT SIGNAL FROM ECM

Check wiring between ECM, distributor
and igniter, only then try another ECM.

NOTICE: ’Cold’ and “Hot’ in the following sentences ex–
press the temperature of the coils themselves. ’Cold’ is
from–10C (14F) to 50C (122F) and ’Hot’ is from
50C (122F) to 100C (212F).

If your distributor checks out, theres no need to replace it

Pickup coil resistance (Cold):
G1 and GE)
125–200ohm
G2 and G(–)
125–200ohm
NE and G(–)
155–2500
Pickup coil resistance (Hot):
G 1 and G(–)
160–235ohm
G2 and G(–)
160–235ohm
NE and G(–)
190–290ohm

If the resistance is not as specified, replace the distributor
housing assembly.

If you only have 4 spark plug wires, its an internal coil on the distributor.. If you have 5 spark plug wires, the center wire runs straight to the external coil.

Everyone seems to be avoiding the broken connector/damaged wire issue. I would try repairing these before getting new/used parts.

If you check the voltage / resistance and it is within FSM Spec, then its good.. I never said to replace with new part

Although if your wiring is split, cracked, frayed, exposed.. I would repair it

I dont think the Gen3 Camry has a Crank Position sensor. I know some models have a Camshaft Sensor on the oil pump, but the only vehicles that actually list Camshaft and Crankshaft are 1mzfe 6cyl

On the 5sfe the Pickup coils in the distributors NE coil detects the crankshaft angle, and the G 1 and G2 coils detect the camshaft position.

Since you've changed the distributor, try replacing the ignitor.

Did you check your distributor for proper resistance?

Glad you figured it out

Do you have any pictures of the spark plugs that were fouled out?
