Hi,
I have a 1998 Toyota Camry, and wanted to know if I am stuck having to go to the Toyota dealer to get a battery for my remote door locks, or can I go to the drug store or Walmart, Target, or someplace else other than the dealership.
If I can get this battery outside the dealership, does anyone know which battery it is, or is it hard to open up the remote with a small screwdriver? Thanks.
Any store that carries batteries will have it. All you need is a small philips head screw driver to take out the old battery, then take it along to make sure you get the right one.
Pop yours open and get the number off of the battery. You can even order them online. I've had luck finding them at Walgreens of all places and of course Radio Shack.
So there's really no difference between buying them from Walgreens or radio shack ,than going to the dealer with their 300% mark up?
Now if the battery does not work, then I may need another new remote.
When I stand there and try to either lock or unlock using the remote, I have to hit it about eight to ten times before it finally works..maybe the button is getting worn out. I'm hoping it's the battery.
Off topic, but maybe you can answer....My right speaker is blown. When I play bassy jazz or anything else, it rattles, and sounds fuzzy. Is it worthwhile to just go to Fry's electronics and pay them between $20.00 and 40.00, plus the cost of a pair of new speakers, or is this something I can do myself? This is a 1998 camry so I don't know how good the factory speakers are compared to installing better ones.
Another thing I have done successfully is clean the contacts on the little circuit board in the remote using a pencil eraser and light pressure. While the plastic case and rubber buttons are off, give them a good wash using dishwashing soap. (obviously with the electronic parts removed) Remotes get oil from your hands inside them and it messes with the contacts.
Just go to the dealer and have them put a new battery in. I go for.my grandmas 2007 avalon remote battery and its like. 3 or 4 $ . I rather do tht...since.its only a few bucks. Then if tht doesn't make it work, then clean it urself.as for speakers.... just go to crutchfield.com and look for a set of 6 3/4" speakers. Get either alpine, kicker, or pioneer. That all have high and low end stuff. U will find a world.of diference if u get a new head unit (radio) as well. Not sure how well the new speakers wil sound off the stock radio . U get what u pay for on speakers. Get one of the brands I mentioned and u will be good. They give u the intallation toolz as well. Headunits... go with pioneer, alpine, or kenwood.(personal favorite). U can get a good one for less than 150$. Some pioneers for even$ 89.
Let us kno what u do. Good luck.

Just go grab a button cell battery! Usually a CR2032, CR2016, or whatever the size may be. Just unscrew the back and take a look. Easy.

You need to take the remote apart and clean the rubber/silicone membrane with some degreaser. Dish soap will only work fer a little while. Make sure you wear some eye protection and gloves or the degreaser will strip the oils out of yer fingers/hands to the point you won't be able to grip anything fer about a day.
I use Purple Power degreaser on just about everything...
You can use some degreaser on the circuit board using a cotton swab...
All remotes with the rubber/silicone membrane will eventually pick up the oils from yer fingers and wick it through to the circuit board. Yes...even the ones fer yer cable/TV...but you can take those apart and clean them the same way...
