HArd Start after warm up and 10 - 15 minute cooldown

1995 4 cyclinder.

After running my work commute (30 minutes at 65 - 80) If I let the car sit for 10 - 15 minutes I get a hard start. I can pump the throttle a couple or times adn hod the starter on adn it wil strat - keeping the throttel reving it seem s to correct.

If I had let it sit 30 or 40 minutes it never chirps once.

Can anyone suggest something to try ?

I have a new PVC adn a good cleaning of the throttle body. The EGR is really tough to get off.

Sounds like I get something stcuk or a vacumm is pulled on soemthing adfn if you weait long enoguh it bleeds down.

Ideas ? I know somene on this board has seen this.

How many miles? When you cleaned the throttle body, did you take it off to clean it? If so, did you clean the IAC valve, too?

First, check the coil inside the distributor for being out of range and also remove it and inspect it for cracks. Weak coils can produce problems when they heat up.

Second, the engine coolant temperature sensor for also being out of range. It may be telling the computer the car is cold, when it is warm. This would produce an overly rich mixture for a warm engine.

Also check fuel pump pressure. It may be weak. Weak pumps have a tendancy to produce problems when they get hot.

These are all very good inputs. The care has 163,000 adn it runs like I was alwasy told a LExus runs adn rides.

I was tricked into replacing the distributer at 110,000 miles so I think I am going after the IAC (Can I take the IAC off with out taking off the throttle body ?) and the engine coolant temperature. The failure at 110 was due to the water pump failing and leaking water onto the belt that failed catastrophically. IT hink the water pump failed becasue eithert 1. The aftermarket was not up to snuff or 2. I actually lost the radiator at some earlier point.

My friend built this car in the Georetown plant and he knew they were doing something special at teh time. It might go to 200 k easy.

"I was tricked into replacing the distributer at 110,000 miles"

If this was an aftermarket distributor (not Toyota OEM), I would still suspect the coil. People on this forum have been complaining that aftermarket coils don't last that long. I would still check it.

"(Can I take the IAC off with out taking off the throttle body ?)"

No, but I would first try to clean it while still on the car. It might solve your problem. Here's a link to cleaning the throttle body and the idle air control valve for the later version of the 5SFE engine. Your 5SFE engine should be almost identical:
