Timing belt service

Hi All,

Wife drives a '99 Camry with 2.2 liter 4 cyl engine. It has 77k miles on it. Never had the timing belt replaced. The engine is making a rattling noise which I suspect is the tensioner.

Anyone in Oklahoma? Looking for recommendations for service on this matter. Should I take it to a dealer? If so, any recommendation on which one?

Independent garage? Any recommendations there?

I appreciate any feedback.

Thanks!
David

DIY

Your tensioner is probably okay. Your belts probably just stretched out.

All together it costs about $50 - $150 to DIY.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOT...item255a2758a9

This includes:

1. Cam Seal
2. Crank Seal
3. Water Pump
4. Timing Belt
5. Tensioner / Spring

Hey there, thanks for the reply.

I have no doubt I could do it myself but I don't have a lot of time. We live out in the sticks and rely on this vehicle on a daily basis.

I'm afraid if I did it myself, it would be down for a couple of weeks.

Thanks,
David

Been doing them since they were 2sfe motors

Well a dealer always isn't going to do it correctly either. Its usually a gamble going anywhere to get work on your vehicles done. Especially in this economy. I've heard of mechanics actually messing with stuff other than is actually wrong so that once its done, another problem occurs. So on and so on...

If you have a trustworthy mechanic that you trust, I would use them if that's what you want to do.

I do all of my own work, just because I am very particular in how I like things to be done. But that's just me.

A first timer changing a timing belt, at the MOST I could see it taking 6 hours.

there is also alternative timing kit set (seems 99% OEM) at much lower than OEM price:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

much less pieces though (7 total).

you could ask some local garage (e.g. NAPA Authorized center) if they could do it for you with your own parts and Toyota red coolant. shop around for a good quote, but they usually charge per book for at least 3.5hrs labor (if oil pump seals are not included, if they are then you are looking at 5.9hrs book time).

Fenixus reminded me of a good point when saying what the labor is for seals too:

- Don't neglect the seals! There is no sense doing this job and not doing the oil seals too (as they can seep oil out and ruin the belt job, necessitating doing it all over again)

FYI: to all the members, if you haven't already seen any of my posts. If you are like me, and want OEM parts, I do offer 30% off MSRP and I only charge actual shipping costs plus $1.00 - $2.00 for materials, etc.
