transmission and engine coolant

i am at 90K and am wondering when to change transmission and engine coolant? there is the drain and fill and flush and fill (which is expensive). how do i figure out if these fluids are good or breaking down?

really depends on your driving habits, I personally change the two once a year. ATF should be red not brown looking. some folks are against flushing the ATF, I just change it and clean the strainer myself.
