Key will lock, but not unlock....

Hello,

1999 Camry 4cyl auto, 185K, passenger's side is fine, but drivers side will lock, but not turn key all the way to unlock. I've tried my old worn down key as well as a crisp key. Ignition is fine. Any ideas?

There had been a couple days when the driver's side was stubborn, but would work after a few tries. Now I'm nervous to try and turn the key too hard and maybe break something....

Thanks,
JD

Sounds like your tumbler is getting worn out. Maybe try spraying some penetrating oil in the lock and on the key and work the key in and out a few times. Then try to unlock again

I am agreeing with Mister_Perkins on this one. Spray some graphite in there and work the lock with crisp key. If that doesn't work, I would take it out and look at the cylinder, spray some more graphite in the areas where just spraying inside won't. If that still doesn't pan out, it's timet to replace that cylinder. If you do end up replacing the cylinder, the new lock will come with its own key, but you do have the option of taking the new lock cylinder to a locksmith to have them recode the new lock to your old key. That way you'll have one key still. I don't know what they charge for this service, you'll have to check with your local locksmith.

Take the P/S or trunk cylinder lock out and replace it with the D/S door lock. I would pick whichever one you use the least, which is probably the P/S. This is the cheapest way, and at least you dont have to carry 2 keys!

Hey -- thanks a ton for the advice. I tried some penetrating oil, will try some graphite, and will be researching how to replace that cylinder....

Take Care,
JD
