3rd Generation Blew my Engine and Tranny!

92 camry 5sfe auto 158k
so i had a oil leak for months and never got the chance to fix it. it got to the point where i needed to add about 1 qt a week...then my tranny started slippin. so in the midst of looking to a manual swap i forgot about the oil leak and blew my engine.

Im pulling out the engine and tranny tomorrow morning.
Wish me luck.

Well, it happens. I think you should have at least made sure there was oil in it. Kind of a waste of a motor if you ask me.

Just so you know, to get a motor rebuilt .. its over $500.00 to rebuild a 5sfe back to STOCK. Check my Build for exact prices

It was about 2k for me to do everything and that was with everything new and machine work. My thread is here if u want to browse through.

Headgasket job how long should it take

Some important things to note
* get new head bolts (i made that mistake not fun to tear back down again)
*make sure u put a service bolt in the exhaust cam or the spring can possibly become unwound.
*Machinist got my parts from rockauto have pretty decent prices on stuff

If u have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to pm me.

$2000.00 ???? How did you manage to get a 2k bill?

Did you have a shop rebuild it / Remove / Install it ??

I got quoted the following :

Machine Shop:

112.50 hot tank, magnaflux, inspect block
168.75 align hone mains
112.50 bore and hone cylinders
75.00 deck block
75.00 recondition rod set
30.00 R&R and align floating piston set
56.25 clean, inspect, polish crankshaft
--- If crank is bad add $250.00 for a regrind

$630 total work
$880 with new crank

I had to purchase a new crank as well. That's not including the rebuild kit which is $250 - $450.00 for a master rebuild kit.

All together I am spending around

$1283.89 with new crank

^Really? A new crank? I know they're forged and I couldn't imagine that much damage to warrant a new one. If anything I would think polishing journals then getting the proper sized bearings would have fixed your problem. Well, whats done is done

The crankshafts have service limits (Max amount thats allowed to be ground down) .

On the one 5sfe I am rebuilding, the motor got so hot it spun a bearing and after using a micrometer we found it was too far gone already. That's why I had to purchase a new crankshaft.

Most of the time if you have light scratches or even a deep scratch, you can usually get away with re-grinding it .. which will run you a little under $200.00.

My crankshaft got so hot it warped it (Excessive run-out) and the micrometer reading was past service limits.

It was about 1000 for all my short block work 350 for the head and about 200-250 of fluids for the oil, transmission and stuff like the spark plugs / wires. So lets say around 1600. I did more than just the engine its self. I also had to buy tools to do the job so that put the bill around 1900 and change. I was counting everything not just the machine work. I had to get a hoist and a engine stand to as it was my first time doing an engine. It was well worth it though. If the op has all the tools already it should be around your price.

I guess it depends on what year camry you have and your budget. Mine is a 2001 so I was not going to just throw it in the scrap yard when everything else was acceptable.

Can't blame ya. His seems to need a LOT and it's getting along in years. There comes a time when it's better to invest the money in a new (or newer) car.

Oh okay. Gotcha

It just seemed a bit high to me, but if you didn't have any tools it makes sense

i rather spend 2000 on my engine build knowing its going to be brand new and going to last for a long time then buying a another car not knowing whats wrong with it.

So the engine and tranny is out, took 4 hrs to remove. worst part was the wire harness. broke about 3 connectors and 2 bolts. o well wats done is done.
now this weeks ill throw out that tranny and put the engine on the stand and wash it up so i can start next weekend on taking it apart.
