3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I wanted to Spray paint my 1993 Camry LE 4cyl engine area. The reason is because of all the rust, and it's eating away at everything. I bought some red, silver, and black enamel paint.
I'm planning to spray paint the valve cover, intake manifold, throttle body, and the exhaust manifold.
My question is, is this safe? Will it damage anything? will the high heat chip off the paint?
I'm a car noob because I only been learning about mechanics for less than 1 week. I sitll dont understand how some engine components work.
scrub down the rust, use high heat rust protective paint.. then put on the high heat enamel. if you're doing it for looks, don't do it. if you're doing it for preventative reasons, take your time doing it.
Make sure all of the rust is completely removed. There's a really good rust converter out there called POR 15. You put it on with a brush and it will convert the rust back to good metal.
Just make sure not to spray it onto headers or anything. The paint will still burn even if its high temp. Unless the temp is rated over 1000 degrees I wouldn't spray it on the exhaust manifold. The exhaust Chambers get upwards of 1000 degrees. Maybe hotter than that.
Just remember that clean up and prep is 90% of the paint job. SERIOUSLY. LISTEN. IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO UNDERSTAND THAT.

Uhm. You WILL get flamed around here for that. Plus, if you REALLY want to paint rubber, there's special paint s for it. I did a DIY on it.

painting requires alot of patience. you can't just grab something and instantly spray it and hope it turns out well.
And you'll say that. And if he's like me, he'll hear you... but he wont HEAR YOU. And he'll learn on his own.

I took my time cleaning out all the rust, and prepping it for paint. however as for the hose, i just plugged some paper in the holes, and cleaned it a bit then sprayed it. turned out ugly.
Here is the pics, however I think I broke something because my RPM and speedometer doesnt work now.
the color of the exhaust manifold before I painted it was RUST BROWN. Same with all the areas I painted. I could have done better but I dont know how to remove the components to spray them outside the vehicle.
Dude. You're supposed to REMOVE the valve cover... Unless you taped off the ENTIRE engine bay. And plugged the spark plug holes DANG WELL.

um... yeah... i would suggest not painting hoses as the paint can sometimes accelerate their aging process. i would also suggest for next time removing pieces then paint them to avoid overspray.
DUDE!!!.....Stop please!....You are going to damage stuff before you are even able too fix it. I would seriously go get some engine degreaser and cover up all electrical components and spray this stuff off....You prob damaged some sensors w/ the paint...if I were you...learn how to disassemble and reassemble your engine and its components PROPERLY before you start trying to tackle astetics like engine paint...I would give you a couple of days of paint smell and burning before that exhaust cover goes back to the way it was....
