Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i got a 1993 v6 auto camry and I changed my oil today went up the block and bad smoke started coming out like no more than 30 seconds of driving. I thought I may have spilt some i drove about 3-4 miles and stopped to check. I overfilled not sure by how much considering all i had available was 4 quarts to begin with.
It seemed to stop momentarily at stand still, as well as when i wasn't getting on it. but the moment i start going up a hill or need to accelerate to change lanes clouds and clouds of smoke.
I got back home 3-4 more miles dropped the oil and refilled this time with only 3 qts as my dip stick cant get a good read currently. I let it idle to see what happened and the smoke is still there like when i first changed it.
I'm thinkin maybe i got some slighty touchin the cams or pistons? into the exhast? the exhaust tip has an oily residue. Im thinkin that if there is oil in the exhast system ill have to burn it off right?
The smoke color is not blue at all its a thick white when hard accel.
I dont think i drove it long enough to do any serious damamge but then again im here asking what could it be or is my conclusion good?
5w40 and now 5w30 ....and no smoke ever and ive had it like 6 six years. thats why i dont understand. also there is no mixture of oil and coolant in either oil pan or radiator.
i did however just go down there started it about ten minutes ago and lifted the dip stick for the oil and im not sure if it normally dos this but it was spittin oil out
i know its not giving me a correct reading but it says 3-4 inches over full. and it ticks like is low on oil when i had overfilled it or even close to 5 quarts no tick.(you know what im talkin about like i konw if i add another quart or so it would stop) and Originally when i changed it the first time i only had available was four qaurts but i know refill shouldnt be 5 quarts it should be alil less cuz some oil stays or sits . so im told . when i drained it this second time i only put like 2-3 in it.
Im suppose to be leaving in the morning for houston tx which sucks..
Did you remember to drain the oil before refilling it?
but seriously, lotsohsmoke you under-filled it the first time and even more the second time. your engine needs 5qts of oil after drain, period, as said above... unless ... read at the end.
I think running 1qt low on oil might have screwed up something, and definitely running 2qts below level screwed up some more.
the color of smoke looks like you are burning the coolant? have you checked the coolant level to make sure it doesn't get low now? did you overheat the engine by any chance?
how much oil can you drain out? ever tried to estimate it? maybe your engine is sludged to hell and you drain out only like 1qt of oil and then you keep refilling it with 4qts (Or whatever amount you used to put in it)? just a thought...
what happened to your oil dipstick that it is now inaccurate? dipstick from a different engine or what? it's not good.

Sounds like you have way too much oil in the engine. When that happens, the oil can go through PCV system and hence the smoke. The dipstick doesn't lie (unless you didn't put it in correctly) so if its way above the full mark, you have too much oil in the engine.

agree. The extra oil can damage some sensors - first that come to mind are the 02 sensors...I'm surprised your CEL hasn't come on...and I was always under the impression that excessive oil burned off as blue, not white - white would make me thing head gasket...but if it was, you'd know by the smell.

You dont check the oil level with the car on. With the engine turned off for a good 10 min check the dipstick a couple times.
Its IMPOSSIBLE to check oil level with the engine on.
Are you sure you didn't accidentally pour something else (windshield washer fluid or coolant) into the crankcase? And are you sure you drained the oil and not the transmission fluid?
