3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I went to the junk yard and picked up buttons for the climate control. The defrost and A/C buttons because they look new. NOW...... how do I carefully remove the CC to remove the old and put in the new??
This thread has some helpful pics. It's showing how to change the bulbs, but many of the steps are the same.
Well it doesnt say anything about how to pull the thing out and change those buttons
At the junk yard I just yanked the thing out HARD. Now I have to remove it properly.
Guys... I need your help on this. I dont want to break ANYTHING else.
I had mine apart recently to replace bulbs. That whole climate control panel assembly has to come out, because the buttons have to slide inwards (towards the front of the car). There are some plastic retaining clips on the panel that keep them from sliding forward during normal use. You'll see 'em when you get the assembly out. They're on the bottom side (facing the floor).
When removing the assembly, the wiring harness to those buttons doesn't have much extra length, so it can be a bit difficult to get the plugs disconnected. DON'T just yank on 'em like I did and break the button retaining clip.

We're talking about the '96 in your sig line, right?... not the '03? The '03 might be way different. And the '96 does not have the soft touch buttons?... if that's all correct, follow these instruc's:
Follow the first 5 steps in ASG14's DIY thread here, which shows how to replace light bulbs in the instrument cluster. That'll get the main bezel (trim piece) out, so you'll be able to access to the screws holding in the climate control panel.
Then jump to this thread I mentioned above. Go to post #3, which shows how to remove the faceplate of the climate control assembly. Just the faceplate comes off, not the three rotary switches behind it. (I mis-spoke earlier; I'm old and forget stuff!) The AC and defroster switches *do* come out with the faceplate. I think with the screws out, the only thing holding the climate control faceplate in is the wiring harness. And I *think* there were only two connectors, one for the AC switch and one for the defroster? Carefully pull out the faceplate until you can reach the connectors and unplug them. They have snap-in latches to keep them from falling out. Like I mentioned, there's not a lot of extra cable, so you won't be able to pull it out very far, which makes getting the connectors unplugged difficult.
Once you get the faceplate off, you'll easily see how to get the switches out.
Hope that helps!
